Kawaikini New Century <abbr title=\"Public Charter School\">PCS<\/abbr> won the championship held at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kauai.hawaii.edu\/\"><span lang=\"haw\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Community College<\/a> on December 12.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/kauai-makahiki-games-student-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"person playing traditional game\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-227648\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/kauai-makahiki-games-student-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/kauai-makahiki-games-student-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/kauai-makahiki-games-student.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Kumano I Ke Ala Executive Director Kaina Makua said the games are for everyone, and they bring the community together.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;In Makahiki games, you can be at any ability level, and you going find one place in Makahiki,&rdquo; Makua said.<\/p>\n<p>Makua said this is the second championship held on <span lang=\"haw\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>, and it\u2019s been 20 years in the making.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I see this as a wake-up and a time where our decision makers really got to think about what our youth need,&rdquo; Makua said. &ldquo;Everybody is trying to find their place. You don\u2019t have to be Hawaiian for play Makahiki. You don\u2019t have to be Hawaiian to be accepted in <span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, you just got to buy into what <span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> get.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/kauai-makahiki-games-group-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people playing traditional games\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-227649\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/kauai-makahiki-games-group-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/kauai-makahiki-games-group-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/kauai-makahiki-games-group.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Students from Waimea Canyon, Ke Kula <span lang=\"haw\">Ni&#699;ihau<\/span> O Kekaha, Kula Aupuni <span lang=\"haw\">Ni&#699;ihau<\/span> A Kahelelani Aloha <abbr>PCS<\/abbr>, Chiefess Kamakahelei, <span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Technology Academy, <span lang=\"haw\">Kapa&#699;a<\/span>, Kanuikapono, Island School, Kawaikini, <span lang=\"haw\">Alaka&#699;i<\/span> O <span lang=\"haw\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>, Namahana <abbr>PCS<\/abbr> and Kanu o ka <span lang=\"haw\">&#699;&#256;ina<\/span> competed in games such as k&#333;nane (a traditional Hawaiian strategy board game similar to checkers), hukihuki (a traditional tug-of-war game) and haka moa (a traditional game testing balance, precision and focus).<\/p>\n<p>Director of Hawaiian Culture-Based Education at Island School Kanana Kuhaulua said she teaches her students that the quickest way to get rid of a culture is to get rid of a language, which is why cultural events like this are so vital to the revitalization of Hawaiian culture.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We see where we\u2019re at in revitalization is that events like this are so important because they remind us that our culture is thriving and alive,&rdquo; Kuhaulua said. &ldquo;Seeing the importance of pilina (connections) and being proud of our culture for all of our students, even if they aren\u2019t Hawaiian, is so important. <span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> is our home.
