ʻOhana<\/span> from Pūʻōhala<\/span> School\u2502Ke Kula Kaiapuni<\/a> ʻO<\/span> Pūʻōhala<\/span> gathered on November 7, for their annual STEM<\/abbr> Night, a hands-on evening rooted in ʻōlelo<\/span> Hawaiʻi<\/span> (Hawaiian language) immersion and strengthened this year by a special partnership with the University of Hawaiʻi<\/span> STEM<\/abbr> Pre-Academy<\/a>. About 270 people came together to explore science and engineering through activities led by students, kumu (teachers), 糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> and other community organizations.<\/p>\n

“It was awesome to see families come and build rockets together!” said Nikki Saito, a program specialist at 糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr>\u2019s STEM<\/abbr> Pre-Academy. “I always like to attend community events because we get to be a spark for STEM<\/abbr> interest for students while doing something fun!”<\/p>\n

Saito and her colleagues guided participants through a rocket launch activity, building and testing small paper rockets. Keiki rolled paper tubes, adjusted the fins, predicted the rockets\u2019 paths and experimented with different launch angles to see how science and engineering principles shaped each flight.<\/p>\n

Blending kaiapuni with STEM<\/abbr><\/h2>\n

To support the school\u2019s mission of kaiapuni (Hawaiian language immersion), Pūʻōhala<\/span> kumu Kalani Kuloloia created ʻōlelo<\/span> Hawaiʻi<\/span> versions of the rocket-making instructions, forces of flight and rocket parts. Haum\u0101na (students), m\u0101kua (parents) and k\u016bpuna (elders) worked together in Hawaiian as they rolled the kino (body), twisted the ihu (nose cone) and attached the ʻēheu<\/span> (wings) of the rocket.<\/p>\n

“Having a common and widely understood vocabulary when it comes to science and technology is still a work in progress,” said Kuloloia, who earned a BA<\/abbr> in Hawaiian studies at 糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. “I appreciate opportunities like this to have materials available in ʻōlelo<\/span> Hawaiʻi<\/span> to foster conversations about STEM<\/abbr>-related terms from different Hawaiian perspectives. I ola ko k\u0101kou ʻōlelo<\/span> makuahine ma n\u0101 pōʻaiapili<\/span> a pau o Hawaiʻi<\/span> a puni ke ao. (May our mother tongue thrive in all contexts of Hawaiʻi<\/span> and around the world).”<\/p>\n

As part of STEM<\/abbr> Pre-Academy\u2019s mission to connect 糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> research and innovation to K–12 teachers and learners, STEM<\/abbr> Night participants also had an opportunity to learn more about rocket- and space engineering-related programs across the 糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> System. Highlighted programs include Windward Community College\u2019s Center for Aerospace Education<\/a> and the 糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Space Science and Engineering Initiative<\/a>.<\/p>\n
