The Plumeria Field Day event welcomed more than 100 community members in Waim&#257;nalo.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr> extension agent Alberto Ricordi, master gardeners, and Hele Imua interns from the State of <span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> gave hands-on training on how to properly care for existing plumeria, root new cuttings and maintain tree health, continuing the generations-long local tradition of sharing plumeria.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/manoa-ctahr-plumeria-3-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"person teaching\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-225581\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/manoa-ctahr-plumeria-3-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/manoa-ctahr-plumeria-3-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/manoa-ctahr-plumeria-3.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It also supports <span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s biosecurity by promoting local production, reducing the need to import,&rdquo; said Ricordi.<\/p>\n<h2>Personal instruction<\/h2>\n<p>People took home more than 1,000 cuttings from more than 300 trees, ranging from classic yellow and white plumeria blossoms to vibrant pink and orange colors. For many, the in-person instruction was key.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I have watched YouTube videos but the hands-on activity is the most helpful. And most online videos are from the mainland so they are not geared to help people in <span lang=\"haw\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s unique climate,&rdquo; said attendee Aloha Oh, who picked up cuttings from several plumeria varieties.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/manoa-ctahr-plumeria-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"person holding plumeria cuttings\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-225582\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/manoa-ctahr-plumeria-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/manoa-ctahr-plumeria-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/manoa-ctahr-plumeria-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The event was also a teaching moment for young people. Veronika Villalobos, an environmental leader with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kupuhawaii.org\/\">Kupu<\/a>, brought students who are making their own garden plots with the nonprofit.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We wanted our students to get more opportunities within the natural resources pathways. We hope that bringing them to events like this will get more connected with nature, as well as the community,&rdquo; said Villalobos.<\/p>\n<p>The day\u2019s learning wrapped up with a &ldquo;bring your own dish&rdquo; potluck lunch and talk story, fostering connection and community exchange.
