The University of Hawaiʻi<\/span> Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni Awards<\/a> recognizes outstanding alumni who have used their education to excel professionally, provide inspirational leadership to others and provide service for the benefit of 糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> and the community. This year’s honorees will be recognized on Wednesday, May 7, at the Sheraton Waikīkī Hotel at a dinner in their honor.<\/p>\n

The event will raise essential funding for the 糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Alumni Association<\/a>, a not-for-profit organization that awards student scholarships, connects alumni through its events and the 糖心Vlog官方AA<\/abbr> Online ʻOhana<\/span>, supports 糖心Vlog官方AA<\/abbr> chapters & 糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> campuses and facilitates communication between 糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> and its alumni.<\/p>\n

2014 Distinguished Alumni Award<\/h2>\n

J.Kūhiō Asam<\/strong> (MD<\/abbr> ’78 Mānoa)<\/p>\n

Asam is executive director of the King William Charles Lunalilo Trust and Home<\/a> and currently serves on the boards of the University of Hawaiʻi<\/span> Foundation<\/a>, Hanahauʻoli<\/span> School and Sutter Pacific Health, and is a member of the Kamehameha Schools Alumni Association, Prince Kūhiō Hawaiian Civic Club and ʻAhahui<\/span> o nā Kauka. Claire L. Asam<\/strong> (Med<\/abbr> ’78, PhD<\/abbr> ’99 Mānoa)<\/p>\n

Asam was appointed as trustee of the Queen Liliʻuokalani<\/span> Trust<\/a> in 2007 and currently serves as vice president and executive director of SchoolRise, Hawaiʻi<\/span> Division. She serves on the boards of the Harold K.L<\/abbr>. Castle Foundation and Hawaiʻi<\/span> Medical Service Association, and on the advisory council for the Myron B. Thompson School of Social Work<\/a> at 糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Mānoa. Read more<\/a><\/p>\n

Rick Blangiardi<\/strong> (Med<\/abbr> ’73 Mānoa)<\/p>\n

Blangiardi is general manager of Hawaiʻi<\/span> News Now<\/a> (KGMB<\/abbr> and KHNL<\/abbr>) and has been an executive in the television industry for more than 37 years. In addition to his vast TV<\/abbr> background, Blangiardi is known by many for his role as former Rainbow Warrior defensive coordinator\/associate head football coach, and later as president of Nā Koa Football Club and director of ʻAhahui<\/span> Koa Ānuenue<\/a>. Emme Tomimbang<\/strong> (AA<\/abbr> ’71 Leeward, BEd<\/abbr> ’73 Mānoa)<\/p>\n

Tomimbang is president of EMME, Inc<\/abbr>.<\/a> and is one of Hawaiʻi<\/span>’s most recognized broadcasters with more than 36 years of experience in radio and television. At KHON<\/abbr> 2 she began delivering her Island Style features and anchoring the morning news. Her work includes the highly popular one-hour television series Emme’s Island Moments<\/em> and Emme’s Island Living<\/em>. Read more<\/a><\/p>\n

2014 糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Founders Alumni Association Lifetime Achievement Award<\/h2>\n

John Waiheʻe<\/span> III<\/abbr><\/strong> (JD<\/abbr> ’76 Mānoa)<\/p>\n

Governor Waiheʻe<\/span> served as Hawaiʻi<\/span>’s fourth elected governor and first Native Hawaiian governor from 1986 to 1994. He oversaw the return of Kahoʻolawe<\/span>, the settling of overdue claims, the creation of the first language immersion programs and schools and an apology from President Bill Clinton and the federal government for the illegal overthrow of Hawaiʻi<\/span>. Today he leads Kanaʻiolowalu<\/span>, a project of the Native Hawaiian Roll Commission.<\/p>\n

Governor Waiheʻe<\/span> was a member of the first graduating class of the William S. Richardson School of Law<\/a> in 1976. Through his vision, the Kamakakūokalani<\/span> Center for Hawaiian Studies<\/a>, School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a>, School of Architecture<\/a>, Queen Liliʻuokalani<\/span> Center for Student Services, and Stan Sheriff Center<\/a> were developed, and the commitment for land to build the 糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West Oʻahu<\/span><\/a> was made.
