  {"id":22452,"date":"2014-02-10T14:54:39","date_gmt":"2014-02-11T00:54:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=22452"},"modified":"2020-06-15T15:09:43","modified_gmt":"2020-06-16T01:09:43","slug":"uh-celebrates-study-hawaii-day-at-the-state-capitol","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2014\/02\/10\/uh-celebrates-study-hawaii-day-at-the-state-capitol\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½<\/abbr> celebrates Study <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> Day at the State Capitol"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/gnrc.statecapitol.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"155\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2203\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/gnrc.statecapitol.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/gnrc.statecapitol-260x134.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span><\/a> and its partners will shine a spotlight on the thousands of students from beyond the United States who study at its universities, colleges, preparatory and English language schools with Study <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Day at the Capitol: Celebrating International Students and Education on Thursday, February 13, 10 a.m.&#8211;2 p.m. The day-long event, being organized by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.studyhawaii.org\/\">Study <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Educational Consortium<\/a>, the state <a href=\"http:\/\/dbedt.hawaii.gov\/\">Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism<\/a> (<abbr>DBEDT<\/abbr>) and campuses around <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, will welcome international students, legislators and other state leaders, as well as the education community to the Capitol for an information expo and networking throughout the day.<\/p>\n<p>Organizers hope to provide attendees a comprehensive look at the distinct academic programs and extracurricular opportunities for international students. University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> campuses and representatives of schools and colleges throughout <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, Maui, <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> and the Big Island will be on hand, staffing an information fair on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the Capitol Building.<\/p>\n<p>International students, who make positive contributions to the state&#8217;s diverse culture, also have a strong impact on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>&#8217;s economy&#8212;an estimated $109 million last year, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iie.org\/\">Institute of International Education<\/a> calculations. That is near the economic boost that the state enjoys each year from film and television productions, according to <abbr>DBEDT<\/abbr>. &ldquo;The benefits of our international student population go well beyond the economic activity generated each year,&rdquo; said Dennis Ling, administrator of <abbr>DBEDT<\/abbr>&#8217;s business development and support division. &ldquo;Those students often become part of the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> workforce, contributing to the number of well-educated, highly skilled professionals available to employers and businesses.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The number of international students in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> ticked up slightly this school year to nearly 4,500, according to the annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iie.org\/Research-and-Publications\/Open-Doors\"><em>Open Doors<\/em> report<\/a> compiled by Institute of International Education.
