Her project, <em>Pilina and Whanaungatanga\u2013Trans Pacific Relationality<\/em>, aimed to strengthen Indigenous scholarship and foster deeper connections across the Pacific.<\/p>\n<p>From February to March 2025, she co-led healing-centered activities that promoted solidarity, cultural exchange, and shared knowledge within Indigenous communities.<\/p>\n<p>Antonio, head of the Native Hawaiian &#38; Indigenous Health Program in the Department of Public Health Sciences, has taught at <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa since 2018. In addition to the Fulbright award, she is a 2025 recipient of the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/president\/awards\/#regents-teaching\"><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Board of Regents\u2019 Medal for Excellence in Teaching<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This Fulbright experience has been incredibly timely and humbling. The opportunity to embark on this project validates the importance of this work while providing intentional space and opportunities to sustain authentic relationships with Indigenous scholars across the Pacific,&rdquo; said Antonio.<\/p>\n<h2>Centering Indigenous water, land stewardship<\/h2>\n<p>A key highlight of her Fulbright experience was the Water and Indigenous (<abbr>WAI<\/abbr>) Gathering, a multi-day symposium for Indigenous postgraduate students, scholars and community partners. Co-led with Ashlea Gillon from the University of Auckland and held in collaboration with Project M\u014dkiha, the event included keynotes, workshops and presentations centered on relationships to land, water and community resilience.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_216069\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-216069\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/manoa-antonio-mapuana-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Mapuana Antonio\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-216069\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/manoa-antonio-mapuana-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/manoa-antonio-mapuana-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/manoa-antonio-mapuana.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-216069\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mapuana Antonio<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Project M\u014dkiha is a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Interdisciplinary Research Leaders project that focuses on restoring water and prosperity back to Indigenous communities. Similar to Antonio\u2019s Fulbright project, they work to strengthen communities by promoting the importance of cultural environmental sustainability, while also supporting the advancement of Indigenous-led solutions.<\/p>\n<p>Other collaborators include Troy J.H. Andrade, professor at the <a href=\"http:\/\/law.hawaii.edu\">William S. Richardson School of Law<\/a>, and <span aria-label=\"Luukia\">Lu&#699;ukia<\/span> Nakanelua of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Land Trust.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The <abbr>WAI<\/abbr> symposium brought together partners from across the Pacific and highlighted the deep interconnections between water, land and Indigenous communities,&rdquo; said Andrade.<\/p>\n<p>Antonio also contributed to M\u0101ori Studies lectures, health discussions and podcast collaborations.
