The project is co-sponsored by the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and brings together voices from across <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> to explore the plant\u2019s deep cultural and ecological roots.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;When I started as a professor, this is exactly the type of collaborative project I had hoped to support, bringing together practitioners of science, culture and land management together to consider emergent solutions,&rdquo; said Noa Lincoln, a professor of Indigenous Crops and Cropping Systems at the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience<\/a>. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Related <em><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> News<\/em> story: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2025\/01\/21\/noa-lincoln-pecase-award\/\">Biden honors <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> professor for research excellence<\/a>, January 21, 2025<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Weaving together<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_215938\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-215938\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/hilo-hala-exhibit-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"tools\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-215938\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/hilo-hala-exhibit-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/hilo-hala-exhibit-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/hilo-hala-exhibit-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-215938\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tools for working with hala leaves.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The exhibit embraces the Hawaiian concept of makawalu or understanding phenomena from multiple perspectives. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This exhibition represents a creative encounter between different worldviews, opening doors to other ways of relating to and understanding hala,&rdquo; said co-curator Kanani Daley, a Native Hawaiian artist and designer. &ldquo;Throughout our 14-month collaborative process, we constantly asked ourselves: &lsquo;What does hala want?&rsquo;&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The exhibit includes works by acclaimed artists such as Marques Marzan, Sean Connelly and Carl F.K.P. Pao. Also featured are hands-on opportunities to learn. 糖心Vlog官方ors can attend free guided gallery walks on May 17, 24 and 31 from 10 a.m. to noon, or join a bracelet weaving workshop on May 31 from 1 to 2 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>The project is driven by leaders from <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s Indigenous Cropping Systems Laboratory, Ku A Kanaka, The Kohala Center and the Enlivened Cooperative. Support also comes from the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Pacific Islands Climate Adaptation Science Center and several community organizations.<\/p>\n<p>The Wailoa Art Center is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free.
