More than 90&#37; of employers say hiring is challenging, often leading to reduced patient care availability, according to the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Dental Association.<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/programs\/health\/health-sciences\/dent\/\">Dental Assisting Program<\/a> is stepping up to fill this gap\u2014with cutting-edge technology that sets students apart. Thanks to a generous grant from the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Dental Services Foundation, students now train with some of the most advanced dental tools available.<\/p>\n<p>There were 1,350 dental assistants employed across the state in 2023 and that number is expected to grow by 15&#37; by 2030.<\/p>\n<h2>Tech in the classroom<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_213237\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-213237\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/kapiolani-dental-assisting-program-3.jpg\" alt=\"person working on teeth model\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-213237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/kapiolani-dental-assisting-program-3.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/kapiolani-dental-assisting-program-3-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/kapiolani-dental-assisting-program-3-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-213237\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Student working on printed <abbr>3D<\/abbr> model of teeth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One of the biggest upgrades is <abbr>3D<\/abbr> printing, allowing students to create dental molds, retainers, and nightguards\u2014skills that are rare in the field. Only 10&#37; of dental assistants nationwide have <abbr>3D<\/abbr> printing experience, making <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>\u2019s program a national leader.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As dental offices across the islands continue to modernize, there is a growing demand for dental assistants trained in the latest technological advancements,&rdquo; said Dental Assisting Program Director Mark Nartatez. &ldquo;The technological advancements we acquired not only enrich student learning but also prepare them to meet the increasing expectations of modern dental practices.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Other notable enhancements include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Digital and phosphor plate radiography&#8212;Imaging techniques for clearer, faster X-rays.<\/li>\n<li>Intraoral photography&#8212;Real-time imaging for better patient care and communication.<\/li>\n<li>Digital impressions&#8212;Ensuring students are fluent in both analog and digital workflows.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;Faculty innovation and dedication within the Health Academic Programs play a significant role in enhancing student learning experiences,&rdquo; said Karen Boyer, dean of Health Academic Programs. &ldquo;By forging strong industry partnerships and integrating emerging technologies, our faculty align the learning environment with workforce needs and strengthen student learning and career readiness.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Shere Saneishi-Kim, director of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Dental Service Foundation, added, &ldquo;We&#8217;re pleased to support <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>&#8216;s Dental Assisting program with state-of-the-art dental equipment to build their skills and confidence with equipment they will utilize when joining the dental workforce.
