Right photo: <span aria-label=\"Molokai\">Moloka&#699;i<\/span> red dirt: The result of &lsquo;huli ka lima i lalo&rsquo;&#8212; hands turned down to work in the soil.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ulu&#257;kea, an Indigenous-based program housed at <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Hilo\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/kipuka\/\">K&#299;puka Native Hawaiian Student Center<\/a>, is designed to teach faculty in various academic disciplines at both <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Hilo and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> to gain a more authentic and practical understanding of Indigenous ways of knowing the world. The ultimate goal is to integrate these perspectives into teaching practices, enriching the educational experience for students.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We have applied for and received Title <abbr title=\"Roman numeral three\">III<\/abbr> funding which has enabled us to incorporate the <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/strategicplan\/2021-31\/kaao.php\"><span aria-label=\"Kaao\">Ka&#699;ao<\/span> Framework<\/a> into much of what we do,&rdquo; said <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Hilo Chancellor Bonnie Irwin. Led by <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Hilo <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/catalog\/hawaiian-studies\">Hawaiian studies<\/a> lecturer Malu Dudoit, who hails from Maui and <span aria-label=\"Molokai,\">Moloka&#699;i,<\/span> their journey began with a visit to <span aria-label=\"Anakala\">&#699;Anakala<\/span> (Uncle) Mac Poepoe, a respected konohiki (head person) of the <span aria-label=\"ahupuaa\">ahupua&#699;a<\/span> (land division) he resides in.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;[He] shared with us stories of his upbringings, traditions of his familial practices, and current issues he faces when working with modern technologies in the practice of <span aria-label=\"aina\">&#699;&#257;ina<\/span> stewardship and sustainability,&rdquo; said Dudoit who is facilitator for Ulu&#257;kea.<\/p>\n<p>The group included a wide mix of educators: <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>  <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/i-ola-haloa\">I Ola H\u0101loa Center for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Life Styles<\/a> Coordinator and <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/catalog\/hawaiian-studies\">Hawaiian studies<\/a> Assistant Professor <span aria-label=\"Noel\">No&#699;el<\/span> Tagab-Cruz; <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> Instructors Drew Kapp (<a href=\"https:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/social-sciences\">geography<\/a>), Meidor Hu (art) and Jesna Nissam (<a href=\"https:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/mns\">mathematics<\/a>); and <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Hilo Associate Professor Christopher Knudson (<a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/depts\/geography\/\">geography<\/a>) and visiting professor Nicole Drakos (<a href=\"https:\/\/astro.uhh.hawaii.edu\/\">physics and astronomy<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>One of the retreat\u2019s highlights also included a <span aria-label=\"huakai\">huaka&#699;i<\/span> wahi pana o <span aria-label=\"Molokai\">Moloka&#699;i<\/span> (journey to storied places on <span aria-label=\"Molokai,\">Moloka&#699;i),<\/span> guided by K&#299;puka peer mentor Kahaku Poepoe, a Hawaiian studies student at <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Hilo and grandson of <span aria-label=\"Anakala\">&#699;Anakala<\/span> Mac Poepoe. He led the group on an exploration of the cultural and historical significance of these places.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the year, Ulu&#257;kea conducts workshops on Native Hawaiian protocols, <span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;&#333;lelo<\/span> (language), crafts and <span aria-label=\"ainabased\">&#699;&#257;ina-based<\/span> journeys that immerse participants in experiential learning or research.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The purpose of the retreat was to solidify what each participant has learned throughout the year-long program and to learn how other educators integrate Indigenous knowledge and practices into their curriculum, pedagogy, research, and service to our respective campuses,&rdquo; said Dudoit.<\/p>\n<h2><span aria-label=\"Paieie\">P&#257;&#699;ie&#699;ie:<\/span> Indigenizing campuses<\/h2>\n<p>The <span aria-label=\"Paieie\">P&#257;&#699;ie&#699;ie<\/span> grant that funds Ulu&#257;kea, is a $2.99 million award from the U.S. Department of Education.
