The 15-minute short film, released last year by filmmaker Eleni Avenda\u00f1o, premiered at the Fall 2023 <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> International Film Festival (<abbr>HIFF<\/abbr>) and will be screened at the upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/hiff.org\/summer-flix\/\">Prince Waikiki Summer Flix<\/a> presented by <abbr>HIFF<\/abbr> on July 17.<\/p>\n<p>Retired from <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> in 2016, Agbayani has made significant contributions to immigrants and underserved students throughout her decades-long career from the 1960s. <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_200372\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-200372\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/manoa-agbayani-amy-eleni-avendano.jpg\" alt=\"avendano and agbayani\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" class=\"size-full wp-image-200372\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/manoa-agbayani-amy-eleni-avendano.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/manoa-agbayani-amy-eleni-avendano-130x130.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-200372\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eleni Avenda\u00f1o and Amy Agbayani at the <abbr>HIFF<\/abbr> premiere of <em>Amefil<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;She may be well known in political circles, but she often works behind the scenes,&rdquo; said Avenda\u00f1o, who was intrigued by Agbayani\u2019s story. &ldquo;I wasn&#8217;t confident <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>&#8216;s younger generation had heard of her or ever met her. I was hoping a film project like this could get her impactful life story on record.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Although I was not used to the camera following me around, the short film provided a valuable platform to share my journey and amplify the call for greater diversity and equity at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and across the state,&rdquo; said Agbayani.<\/p>\n<p>Avenda\u00f1o noted Agbayani\u2019s captivating personality and her &ldquo;infectious energy, brilliant wit, and humor puts people at ease.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Those who don&#8217;t know her could underestimate her, but she has the ability to command a room and capture the attention of lawmakers,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;She&#8217;s truly a phenomenon, and when she was willing to let me follow her around and attempt to capture at least part of her story on film, it was a huge honor.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Documentary highlights<\/h2>\n<p>The documentary showcases Agbayani\u2019s tireless work to promote equal access, diversity and inclusion in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s educational institutions. Avenda\u00f1o explained, &ldquo;Manang Amy has championed these values in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s classrooms and university lecture halls. She inspires people to run for office and make change in their communities. How do you fit that into a 15-minute film? I tried to include as much as possible.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The film highlighted the establishment of <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/diversity\/seed-programs\/\">Office of Student Equity, Excellence, and Diversity<\/a> (<abbr>SEED<\/abbr>), which evolved from a mentorship program for Filipino youth Agbayani helped create in the 1970s called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/12\/06\/operation-manong-50th-anniversary\/\">Operation Manong<\/a>. <abbr>SEED<\/abbr> now offers programs for Native Hawaiians, women, students with disabilities, <abbr>LGBT<\/abbr> students, and other underserved groups, thanks to Agbayani\u2019s efforts.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"blocklink\">Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2023\/10\/23\/agbayani-women-of-impact-award\/\">Agbayani earns East-West Center Women of Impact Award<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the film, Agbayani shared the story of Manuel Fragante, a man who sued the City and County of Honolulu for job discrimination relating to his accent. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;His story is interesting because, as Manang Amy tells it, they lost the case in court, but it ultimately helped to push for the creation of the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Civil Rights Commission, of which she was founding chair,&rdquo; said Avenda\u00f1o.<\/p>\n<p>At 81-years-old, Agbayani remains active.
