(Photo credit: NASA)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Undergraduates at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa were inspired to build a giant antenna to explore hundreds of miles above the planet. Any disturbance in this region, such as those caused by the Sun (solar flares, geomagnetic storms, etc.), can severely affect radio transmissions and cause blackouts. Undergraduate students Arianna Corry, Emily Harris, Kyra Dyer and Grace McCoy, in the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½<\/abbr> M&#257;noa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a> (<abbr>SOEST<\/abbr>), teamed up to embark on a research journey to try and better understand this region.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Some of us are long-time sci-fi fans&#8212;especially of the amazing work of Arthur Clarke&#8212;and we wanted a name that could encapsulate the sense of adventure that we all experienced reading the books that we love so much,&rdquo; said Corry, who will be graduating this semester with a degree in atmospheric sciences and will start a master\u2019s degree program at <abbr>SOEST<\/abbr> in the fall. &ldquo;When Giuseppe mentioned that the branch of atmospheric science that studies the upper layers of the atmosphere is called &lsquo;aeronomy,&rsquo; we immediately thought about the name Aeronauts.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Getting their hands dirty<\/h2>\n<p>Certain radio signals emitted by various sources on the planet, such as over-the-horizon radars, are reflected back to Earth\u2019s surface by the ionosphere.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_197874\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-197874\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/manoa-soest-giant-antenna-3-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"student by computer\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-197874\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/manoa-soest-giant-antenna-3-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/manoa-soest-giant-antenna-3-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/manoa-soest-giant-antenna-3.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-197874\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Arianna Corry set up the ionosonde\u2019s computer.
