The results are more than 160 <abbr>RSVPs<\/abbr> to lively mini workshops attended by <a href=\"https:\/\/socialsciences.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Social Sciences<\/a> (<abbr>CSS<\/abbr>) students and alumni; an all-encompassing presentation about the <a href=\"https:\/\/socialsciences.manoa.hawaii.edu\/in-a-class-by-itself\/\">five related but distinctive departments<\/a> within <abbr>SCI<\/abbr>; and a networking reception honoring the first five <abbr>SCI<\/abbr> distinguished alumni for their exceptional leadership and significant contributions to the community.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/manoa-css-sci-open-house-classroom-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people sitting and listening in a classroom\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-195180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/manoa-css-sci-open-house-classroom-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/manoa-css-sci-open-house-classroom-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/manoa-css-sci-open-house-classroom.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It all happened on April 5, at George Hall and the Architecture Building at the <abbr>SCI<\/abbr> event spotlighting the programs of <a href=\"https:\/\/sci.manoa.hawaii.edu\/programs\/communication\/\">communication<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sci.manoa.hawaii.edu\/programs\/communicology\/\">communicology<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sci.manoa.hawaii.edu\/programs\/journalism\/\">journalism<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sci.manoa.hawaii.edu\/programs\/library-and-information-science\/\">library and information science<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/sci.manoa.hawaii.edu\/programs\/matsunaga-institute-for-peace\/\">Matsunaga Institute for Peace<\/a>. Now one of the largest academic units at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, <abbr>SCI<\/abbr> has 24 faculty members, 305 undergraduate majors and 76 graduate students, with a total of more than 4,000 <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa students taking 220-plus <abbr>SCI<\/abbr> classes over the course of an academic year.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Communication competence, information literacy and communication technology literacy are foundational skills that our students need to succeed in today\u2019s world.&#8212;Hye-ryeon Lee<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&ldquo;The open house aimed to showcase the new school\u2019s core values of communication, connection and community, and to foster relationships with alumni and community partners for collaborative growth and development,&rdquo; said Hye-ryeon Lee, <abbr>SCI<\/abbr> chair and communicology professor. &ldquo;Communication and information are at the core of our existence. Communication competence, information literacy and communication technology literacy are foundational skills that our students need to succeed in today\u2019s world. The <abbr>SCI<\/abbr> is the core unit that provides this important education at the university.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Announced at the presentation were the five inaugural recipients of the 2024 Distinguished Alumni Award.
