Josh Green<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A special ceremony followed next to Bachman Hall near a Chaulmoogra tree planted in Ball\u2019s honor by the king of Siam in 1935, where a dedication plaque rests in the celebrated alumna\u2019s name. Oli (chant) formally opened a program reaffirming February 28 as &ldquo;Alice Augusta Ball Day.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Lieutenant Gov. Sylvia Luke read an official proclamation signed by Gov. Josh Green in honor of the first African-American and woman to graduate from both <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa and the United States with a master\u2019s degree in chemistry in 1915. At the age of 23, Ball made groundbreaking contributions as a scientist by discovering an injectable form of oil from the Chaulmoogra tree, which became the most effective treatment for Hansen\u2019s disease (leprosy) in the first half of the twentieth century.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Can you imagine as a woman and a woman of color what kind of struggles and difficulties she had? But she was able to overcome that,&rdquo; Luke said.<\/p>\n<h2>Recent milestones<\/h2>\n[vc_video link=&#8221;https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HSy3CFvuhWY&#8221; el_aspect=&#8221;916&#8243; align=&#8221;right&#8221; el_id=&#8221;wrap-video-right&#8221;] <\/p>\n<p>At the ceremony, <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> President David Lassner announced two major milestones honoring Ball\u2019s enduring legacy.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>American Chemical Society (<abbr>ACS<\/abbr>) approved a nomination to award the National Historic Chemical Landmark designation to Ball for developing one of the first effective leprosy treatments in 1915. The <abbr>ACS<\/abbr> designation will be formally installed in the Alice Ball section of <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/library\/\">Hamilton Library<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>A life-sized bronze bust of Ball will be sculpted by artist Lynn Liverton and installed in late 2024 inside Hamilton Library.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As attendees soaked in the emotional ceremony on campus, members of the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> &#699;ohana and the community pondered Ball\u2019s influence. Speakers included <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kalaupapaohana.org\/\">Ka &#699;Ohana O Kalaupapa<\/a> and retired professor Kathryn Waddell Takara, who delivered a stirring poem about prevailing in the face of adversity.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Many of those barriers are still there for all kinds of people, and I think the lesson of overcoming barriers to achieve excellence, you know that\u2019s what the story is about, to me,&rdquo; said Lassner.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_192759\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-192759\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/manoa-alice-ball-oli-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people chanting\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-192759\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/manoa-alice-ball-oli-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/manoa-alice-ball-oli-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/manoa-alice-ball-oli.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-192759\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Oli (chant) opened the commemoration near Bachman Hall.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>LaJoya Shelly, an <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/edea\/\">educational administration<\/a> <abbr>PhD<\/abbr> candidate and member of <a href=\"https:\/\/bsauhmanoa.wordpress.com\/\"><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s Black Student Association<\/a> emphasized Ball\u2019s inspiration.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;For me, Alice represents what&#8217;s possible. Wermager has written a book on Ball and established the <a href=\"http:\/\/scholarships.uhfoundation.org\/scholarships\/scholarship_detail.aspx?acct=12748502#:~:text=In%202006%2C%20the%20University%20of,their%20Medal%20of%20Distinction%2C%20posthumously.&#038;text=Description%3A,Manoa%20College%20of%20Natural%20Sciences.\">Alice Augusta Ball Endowed Scholarship<\/a> for underrepresented minority students at <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa who, like Ball, hope to enter the science field.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;She gave actually hope to millions. She went on to become the school\u2019s first African American female chemistry instructor and department head. Due to her research with kava for her <a href=\"https:\/\/scholarspace.manoa.hawaii.edu\/collections\/db963074-ba28-4df9-80e2-872164860f13\">master\u2019s thesis<\/a>, Ball was recruited by the U.S. Public Health Service (Kalihi Hospital) to use the same technique to find a treatment for Hansen\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n<p>She made the fundamental scientific contribution by applying a new method of isolating ethyl esterification from fatty acids of the chaulmoogra oil so it could be effectively administered to patients by injection.<\/p>\n<p>This isolation technique, later called the &ldquo;Ball Method,&rdquo; was the first successful treatment for Hansen\u2019s disease that was used on thousands of patients around the world until the introduction of sulfone drugs in the mid-1940s. The Ball method was used to treat patients in Kalaupapa, permitting them to return to their families after being banished to isolation facilities on the remote <span aria-label=\"Molokai\">Moloka&#699;i<\/span> peninsula.<\/p>\n<h2>Early death<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/manoa-alice-ball-photo.jpg\" alt=\"Alice Augusta Ball sign with lei\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-192761\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/manoa-alice-ball-photo.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/manoa-alice-ball-photo-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/manoa-alice-ball-photo-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sadly, Ball died on December 31, 1916, at the age of 24, before publishing her groundbreaking work. The president of the College of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, Arthur Dean, continued her work and published her findings, but failed to mention key research she conducted. He mass produced the injectable treatment and was praised for the discovery, calling it the &ldquo;The Dean Method.&rdquo; In 1922, Harry T. Hollmann, the doctor at Kalihi Hospital who encouraged Ball to explore chaulmoogra oil, <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=uSYKAQAAMAAJ&#038;pg=PA95#v=onepage&#038;q&#038;f=false\">published a paper<\/a> and attributed her process as the &ldquo;Ball Method,&rdquo; giving her the proper credit she deserved.<\/p>\n<p>In 2007, the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Board of Regents <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/offices\/bor\/distinction.php?person=ball\">posthumously awarded Alice Ball their Medal of Distinction<\/a>, for her exceptional accomplishments and significant contributions to the university, state and the world. The medal is on display at <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s Hamilton Library alongside her <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/library\/about\/organization\/artwork\/alice-augusta-ball-1892-1916\/\">portrait<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Alice Ball Day in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> had previously been proclaimed in 2000 to be February 29, which falls on Black History Month, after what is now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kalaupapaohana.org\/january-is-kalaupapa-month\">Kalaupapa Month<\/a> in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> (January) and before Women\u2019s History Month (March). In 2022, Gov. David Ige\u2019s proclamation declared February 28 as \u201cAlice Augusta Ball Day.\u201d It was reaffirmed by Gov.
