{"id":192044,"date":"2024-03-06T08:00:19","date_gmt":"2024-03-06T18:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=192044"},"modified":"2024-03-07T07:59:58","modified_gmt":"2024-03-07T17:59:58","slug":"maui-disaster-training-workshops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2024\/03\/06\/maui-disaster-training-workshops\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr> to host disaster training workshops for Maui community"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_192051\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-192051\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/manoa-ctahr-disaster-workshops.jpg\" alt=\"coconuts and equipment on a table\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"size-full wp-image-192051\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/manoa-ctahr-disaster-workshops.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/manoa-ctahr-disaster-workshops-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/manoa-ctahr-disaster-workshops-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-192051\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Equipment in the <abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr> Maui Extension office for disaster prep training.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In response to the 2023 wildfires on Maui, the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources<\/a> (<abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr>) was awarded a $100,001 grant from <abbr title=\"United States Department of Agriculture\">USDA<\/abbr>, <abbr title=\"National Institute of Food and Agriculture\">NIFA<\/abbr> Rapid Response program to lead a series of adapted <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/ctahr\/getlocal\/emergency-preparedness-training\/\">disaster preparedness training workshops<\/a> for the Maui community.<\/p>\n<p>Participants will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>practice <abbr>CPR<\/abbr>, first aid and fire suppression; prepare an emergency kit;<\/li>\n<li>learn about firewise plants and landscaping to mitigate fires;<\/li>\n<li>and participate in activities on well-being.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Resources will be provided to participants who complete the entire workshop. Workshops will take place in Kihei, <span aria-label=\"Molokai,\">Moloka&#699;i,<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Lanai,\">L&#257;na&#699;i,<\/span> Kahului, Upcountry and Lahaina, and are scheduled to begin in March and continue through November.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The recent disasters of COVID-19 and wildfires have caused forced disruptions in activity, limited information about the future, and economic instability,&rdquo; said Nancy Ooki, a <abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr> Maui extension agent. &ldquo;The combination has placed the Maui community in a position of feeling a sense of loss of control, decision-making ability, and uncertainty of the future. Our hope is that by providing education and training around disasters and emergencies, the community can better understand the recovery process and how each person can be an active participant in helping the community to heal.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The workshops will target a variety of stakeholders: farmers, ranchers, home gardeners, landscape professionals, teachers, parents and youth&#8212;who will also participate as community members working to rebuild Maui after the disaster.<\/p>\n<p>Each workshop will be specific enough to impart knowledge and skills, while general enough to allow all participants to make some connection to the material.
