Nearly 100 people attended the gathering, including <abbr>COH<\/abbr>\u2019s first director Chad Taniguchi, and Warren Nishimoto and Michiko Kodama-Nishimoto, who served as director and associate director respectively for 37 years.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/manoa-oral-history-open-house-group-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"group of people standing and smiling\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-188558\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/manoa-oral-history-open-house-group-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/manoa-oral-history-open-house-group-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/manoa-oral-history-open-house-group.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The celebration was held in <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s George Hall, the home of the Center for Oral History. The event welcomed the center\u2019s new director Mary Kunmi Yu Danico, and honored former acting director Professor Ty K\u0101wika Tengan and retired director Davianna <span aria-label=\"Pomaikai\">P\u014dmaika&#699;i<\/span> McGregor. The reception was hosted by Neil Horikoshi and Gayle Yamada. Horikoshi is an alumnus from <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/shidler.hawaii.edu\/\">Shidler College of Business<\/a> and friend of Danico\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The Ethnic Studies department and the Center for Oral History have enduring ties to our community who care deeply about telling our stories our way,&rdquo; Danico said. &ldquo;I am honored to continue the tradition of preserving memories through oral traditions and look forward to long lasting relationships with our <abbr>COH<\/abbr> <span aria-label=\"ohana\">&#699;ohana<\/span>. Live music was performed by individuals with deep ties to the <a href=\"https:\/\/ethnicstudies.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">Department of Ethnic Studies<\/a> and Center for Oral History. Liko Martin and Laulani Teale performed with Gary Kubota (activist and author of the <em>Kokua <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Oral History Project<\/em> book) and Professor Richard Rath.<\/p>\n<p>The Center for Oral History in the Department of Ethnic Studies was first established in 1976 by the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> State Legislature as a part of the Social Science Research Institute in the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/socialsciences.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Social Sciences<\/a>.
