(Photo courtesy Gates Lab)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Corals are already beautiful when seen with the naked eye, but for scientists at the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a>, observing corals in this manner is simply not enough.<\/p>\n<p>As part of a new <a href=\"http:\/\/video.pbs.org\/program\/pbs-digital-studios\/\"><abbr>PBS<\/abbr> Digital Studios<\/a> series called <a href=\"http:\/\/video.pbs.org\/program\/under-h20\/\"><em>UnderH20<\/em><\/a>, viewers see live corals&#8212;and their associated microorganisms&#8212;from a whole new perspective.<\/p>\n<p>Using a revolutionary new tool, a laser scanning confocal microscope, scientists at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/HIMB\/index.html\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Institute of Marine Biology<\/a> generate images that are one part art and one part science.<\/p>\n<p>The video, <em>The Microscopic World of Corals<\/em>, shows audiences this amazing new technology.
