The poetry book, <em>from unincorporated territory [&#229;mot]<\/em> by Perez, an <a href=\"https:\/\/english.hawaii.edu\/\">English<\/a> professor at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa is a deeply personal piece of work drawing from his life growing up in Gu&#229;han amongst his Indigenous Chamoru people.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I hope that readers of my new book will learn more about Chamoru culture and the history, politics and ecologies of my homeland: Guam,&rdquo; Perez said.<\/p>\n<h2>National spotlight<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/amot-200x300.jpeg\" alt=\"Picture of &#229;mot\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-184121\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/amot-200x300.jpeg 200w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/amot-683x1024.jpeg 683w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/amot-87x130.jpeg 87w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/amot-768x1152.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/amot.jpeg 860w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The book has been selected as a contender for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalbook.org\/2023-national-book-awards-longlist-for-poetry\/\">2023 National Book Award for Poetry<\/a>. It\u2019s one of 10 books in the running for the accolade out of the 295 works that were submitted from across the country. Each year, the National Book Foundation recognizes outstanding literary work by <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr> citizens. In November, judges will select an overall winner at a ceremony in New York City.<\/p>\n<h2><em>from unincorporated territory [&#229;mot]<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>Perez\u2019s latest book is the fifth in an ongoing collection about the history and culture of Guam\u2019s Indigenous people. &#197;mot is the Chamoru word for &ldquo;medicine,&rdquo; and his core intent is to offer healing through experimental and visual poetry.<\/p>\n<h2>Award-winning poet<\/h2>\n<p>In 2022, Perez earned a Modern Language Association Prize for Studies in Native American Literatures, Cultures and Languages, for his book, <em>Navigating CHamoru Poetry: Indigeneity, Aesthetics, and Decolonization<\/em>.
