The lab located inside the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.papahanaumokuakea.gov\/mdc\/\">Mokup&#257;papa Discovery Center<\/a> at Hilo Bayfront is run by founder John Burns, an associate professor of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mare.hawaii.edu\/\">marine science<\/a> and expert on coral health, disease and ecosystems.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_183406\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-183406\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/hilo-mega-lab-camp-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"kids playing in a band\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-183406\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/hilo-mega-lab-camp-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/hilo-mega-lab-camp-1-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/hilo-mega-lab-camp-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-183406\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kids perform inside MEGA lab.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;Science is really a multidimensional process, and sadly, we often lose the connection to artistic creativity,&rdquo; said Burns. &ldquo;The Youth Artivists <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> camp is a great way to engage a diverse audience and showcase how art and science can intersect to promote positive stewardship of our natural resources. The kids were amazing and even hosted a raging rock concert to celebrate the end of the camp.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The summer camp shifted what is commonly called <abbr title=\"science, technology, engineering and mathematics\">STEM<\/abbr> activity\u2014science, technology, engineering and math\u2014to include art, creating a <abbr title=\"science, technology, engineering, art and math\">STEAM<\/abbr> educational program. The goal of the camp was to empower young people through bridging art and science, encouraging them to think creatively about solutions for a healthy and sustainable ocean.<\/p>\n<h2>Touch, see, feel<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_183407\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-183407\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/hilo-mega-lab-camp-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"kids walking in the grass\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-183407\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/hilo-mega-lab-camp-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/hilo-mega-lab-camp-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/hilo-mega-lab-camp-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-183407\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Keiki participated in multiple field trips ma kai (to the ocean).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Participants in the summer program learned about ocean issues, marine conservation, and coral reef protection through art-making, hands-on activities, and field trips to Hilo Bay.<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Island surfer Crispin Nakoa, an alumnus of <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Hilo\u2019s marine science baccalaureate program and <a href=\"https:\/\/tcbes.uhh.hawaii.edu\/\">tropical conservation biology and environmental science<\/a> graduate program, co-managed <abbr>YAH<\/abbr> and worked firsthand with the kids on expressing complex ideas through art. Nakoa, a surfing scientist, is featured in <abbr>MEGA<\/abbr> Lab\u2019s film about this summer\u2019s program and outlines the importance of educating keiki early on about their island home.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Hilo is one of the best places to have access to all these different resources. When I was a kid, I just thought that this place was awesome and nothing was ever going to change,&rdquo; Nakoa explained. &ldquo;But something that was missing through all the fun times that I did have, was really an understanding of all the things that put those places that I love at risk. I think it would have been helpful to learn more about that at a young age.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>A highlight for the students was working alongside Cinzah Merkins, a professional muralist from New Zealand, to create an environmentally-themed mural which is permanently housed inside <abbr>MEGA<\/abbr> Lab.<\/p>\n<p>The mural project was part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/pangeaseed.org\/\">PangeaSeed Foundation&#8217;s<\/a> flagship program <a href=\"https:\/\/seawalls.org\/\">Sea Wall: Artists for Oceans<\/a>.
