The <a href=\"https:\/\/socialsciences.manoa.hawaii.edu\/academy-for-hawaii-intelligence-studies-summer-program\/\">Academy for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Intelligence Studies Summer Program<\/a> (<abbr>AHI-SP<\/abbr>), which focuses on the basics of international relations and national intelligence, is a four-week course offered by the <a href=\"https:\/\/politicalscience.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">Department of Political Science<\/a> in <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M&#257;noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/socialsciences.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Social Sciences<\/a> (<abbr>CSS<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<p>Students learned about a wide variety of concepts including power and contemporary world politics since 1945, with an emphasis on the U.S. role. Simulation games, field trips and networking opportunities with <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>-based industry experts provided an interactive experience bringing real world experiences to complement in-class learning. Our rich heritage of interactions with the Asia Pacific region makes <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> youth especially poised to approach intelligence studies with nuance and sophistication.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>First steps on a workforce pathway<\/h2>\n<p>Students who successfully complete the program will earn college credits in <abbr>POLS<\/abbr> 120: Introduction to World Politics, a university-level course in political science. POLS 120 is the first course in the intelligence studies course sequence currently under development at <abbr>CSS<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is the first program of its kind in the state that provides our high schoolers with college credit for a workforce pathway to national intelligence,&rdquo; said Jairus Grove, <abbr>AHI-SP<\/abbr> program director, political science professor and department chair. &ldquo;AHI\u2019s mission is to find, support and cultivate the next generation of global decision makers right here in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> to help us through the challenges and opportunities ahead as we navigate an unprecedentedly complex Pacific century.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>AHI-SP<\/abbr> participants are high school juniors and seniors from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Island, <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>, Maui and <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>. They were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>77&#37; who identify as female.<\/li>\n<li>80&#37; from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> State Department of Education high schools and charter schools.<\/li>\n<li>57&#37; from the neighbor islands (30&#37; from Maui, 17&#37; from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Island, 10&#37; from <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>) and 43&#37; from <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> residents with a minimum <abbr title=\"grade point average\">GPA<\/abbr> of 2.8, based on cumulative grades from the 9th grade through fall 2022.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;It was really exciting when I got accepted,&rdquo; Wailana <span aria-label=\"Hoopai\">Ho&#699;opai<\/span>, a senior at Kamehameha Schools Maui said. &ldquo;I joined more for international relations, but I was excited to learn new stuff about the intelligence field, like meeting people from Indo-Pacific Command, and more about the role that <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> plays in America\u2019s intelligence apparatus.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_181067\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-181067\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/manoa-css-political-science-ahi-sp-4-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people sitting around a table\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-181067\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/manoa-css-political-science-ahi-sp-4-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/manoa-css-political-science-ahi-sp-4-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/manoa-css-political-science-ahi-sp-4.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-181067\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Photo credit: Sara Maaria Saastamoinen)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Talen Koerte, a <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> High School senior, added, &ldquo;The program is really great. I was not expecting to learn so much about career paths in political science like diplomacy and stuff like that, but it was great that we got to learn about what you can do with political science.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Kailani Clark, a senior at Kealakehe High School, said, &ldquo;A really impactful part about this program was meeting people from different islands, because although the Big Island is the biggest island, I feel like it\u2019s actually really small and your perspective is really limited. So being able to have a roommate that\u2019s from a different island and being able to meet people from all different places in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, I think was a really big part of this journey.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Expenses for <abbr>AHI-SP<\/abbr> students, including registration, tuition\/fees, airfare and on-campus housing\/meals were paid through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiip3i.org\/\">Pacific Intelligence and Innovation Initiative<\/a> (<abbr>P3I<\/abbr>), a public-private partnership to develop a skilled workforce in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Thanks to the support of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s congressional delegation, <abbr>P3I<\/abbr> is a funded initiative dedicated to supplying a skilled <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> workforce to meet the evolving requirements in the Indo-Pacific region with a focus on <abbr>IT<\/abbr>, cybersecurity, data analytics and intelligence,&rdquo; said Jennifer Sabas, <abbr>P3I<\/abbr> co-program lead. &ldquo;We are taking a whole community approach with <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M&#257;noa and West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Community Colleges, Chaminade University and <abbr>DOE<\/abbr> high schools as our academic partners. <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s students, guardsmen and women, and returning <span aria-label=\"kamaaina\">kama&#699;&#257;ina<\/span> have the determination and commitment to step up and serve our nation.
