Funding is made through the <abbr>USDA<\/abbr> Office of Partnership and Public Engagement\u2019s Outreach and Assistance for Socially Disadvantaged Farmers and Ranchers and Veteran Farmers and Ranchers program, also known as the 2501 program.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This grant gives us the ability to expand some of the long-term, ongoing work of <abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr> extension agents who have been striving to better serve the diverse populations we have in the state,&rdquo; said Emilie Kirk, an assistant extension agent located on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/life\">Local and Immigrant Farmer Education<\/a> (<abbr>LIFE<\/abbr>) program lead. &ldquo;The funds will also help us revitalize the <abbr>LIFE<\/abbr> program as a statewide umbrella for these efforts that have been going on.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>The meaning of &lsquo;<abbr>LIFE<\/abbr>&rsquo;<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_178875\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-178875\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/manoa-ctahr-extension-life-3.jpg\" alt=\"two farmers looking at plant\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-178875\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/manoa-ctahr-extension-life-3.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/manoa-ctahr-extension-life-3-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/manoa-ctahr-extension-life-3-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-178875\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Farm Doctor visit with <abbr>CTAHR<\/abbr> Extension faculty examining a Thai farmer&#8217;s dying young avocado tree.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <abbr>LIFE<\/abbr> program first started as the Socially Disadvantaged Farmer Program by former Extension Associate Specialist Sabina Swift in 2002, stemming from the need to provide accessible pesticide safety education in multiple languages for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s diverse population.<\/p>\n<p>Under the management of Extension Agent Jari Sugano from 2008, the <abbr>LIFE<\/abbr> program has provided training in addition to outreach, technical assistance and language accessibility to immigrant farmers with limited English proficiency, ultimately giving underserved producers more meaningful access to agricultural services.<\/p>\n<p>With the current three-year grant, the <abbr>LIFE<\/abbr> program is collaborating with <a href=\"https:\/\/gofarmhawaii.org\/\">GoFarm <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span><\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oahuaca.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Agriculture and Conservation Association<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacificgatewaycenter.org\/\">Pacific Gateway Center<\/a> and other partners, tailoring workshops and more to fit each community they work with specifically at the time.
