The Stupski Foundation was among the supporters who together gave more than $1 million in early 2020 to help <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> students impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Related <em><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> News<\/em> story:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/04\/15\/1m-urgent-student-relief-fund\/\">$1<abbr title=\"million\">M<\/abbr> donated to critical <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Urgent Student Relief Fund<\/a>, April 15, 2020<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;We believe that college education should be affordable and accessible to all low-income and first-generation students, especially for those who struggle with basic needs such as food and housing,&rdquo; said Cheri Souza of the Stupski Foundation. &ldquo;We recognize this support is critical to their persistence to stay in school and graduate, and their overall health and well-being.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The Stupski Foundation really understands how difficult it can be for college students to have access to food and financial aid so they can stay in school and graduate,&rdquo; added <strong>Tim Dolan<\/strong>, <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> vice president of advancement and <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Foundation <abbr title=\"chief executive officer\">CEO<\/abbr>. &ldquo;We\u2019re grateful they have made basic needs for <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> students a priority.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/student-basic-needs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/33\/2021\/06\/糖心Vlog官方-System-2021-HOPE-Report.pdf\">survey conducted during the 2020\u201321 academic year<\/a> found that two out of five <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> students had experienced hunger in the prior 30 days. A recent study also found that more than one in three students don\u2019t have enough to eat, a problem only made worse by recent high inflation. In addition, college students who were able to buy food with the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (<abbr>SNAP<\/abbr>) under pandemic boosts will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/02\/02\/1153519292\/snap-benefits-extra-food-stamps-social-security\">lose their benefits in March<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Two years ago, the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Basic Student Needs Committee launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/student-basic-needs\/\">Student Basic Needs website<\/a> to assist students in finding the help they need, not only with buying food but also childcare, transportation, mental health services and financial aid to pay for school.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our students should not have to choose between food and learning,&rdquo; said <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> President <strong>David Lassner<\/strong>. &ldquo;Satisfying students\u2019 basic needs is essential for them to be able to complete their education and thrive.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Stupski Foundation supported initiatives<\/h2>\n<p>The Stupski Foundation gifts will support the following initiatives:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Launching the Kahuaola Basic Needs Center, <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Community College<\/a>&#8216;s one-stop center that offers a comprehensive approach to providing cross-campus support and services opened on February 13 at the Manono campus in Hilo. In addition to helping more students apply for financial aid, the program serves as a hub for the <a href=\"https:\/\/hinethawaii.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Nutrition Employment and Training<\/a> <span aria-label=\"Hoola\">Ho&#699;ola<\/span> Ike program, which helps students to access <abbr>SNAP<\/abbr> benefits and supplemental funds for childcare, transportation and housing expenses that are often hurdles to staying in or completing college.<\/li>\n<li>The creation of the first ever systemwide <a href=\"https:\/\/star.hawaii.edu\/virtual-kiosk\/app.jsp#!\/kiosk?unit=858\"><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Financial Assistance and Basic Needs Virtual Caf\u00e9<\/a> to connect <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> students to all basic needs services and resources. The initiative includes piloting a test of financial literacy programs within the Virtual Basic Needs Caf\u00e9, which launched at <a href=\"https:\/\/star.hawaii.edu\/virtual-kiosk\/app.jsp#!\/kiosk?unit=858\"><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/windward.hawaii.edu\">Windward <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr><\/a> and will roll out to the other eight campuses in 2023.<\/li>\n<li>The revision of current policies and creation of a strategic, financial aid system to remove financial barriers for <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Community College students.
