Of that total, the <a href=\"https:\/\/seagrant.soest.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Sea Grant College Program<\/a> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">(Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Sea Grant) will be awarded &#36;624,725.<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Sea Grant faculty and their collaborators will lead two projects:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>improving coastal water quality across the state and forecast fecal bacteria levels in Waik&#299;k&#299;;<\/li>\n<li>assisting communities on the North Shore of <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> to adapt to climate change, including energy, water, food sustainability, watershed restoration and more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_172318\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-172318\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/manoa-sea-grant-waikiki-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"aerial image of waikiki\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-172318\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/manoa-sea-grant-waikiki-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/manoa-sea-grant-waikiki-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/manoa-sea-grant-waikiki.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-172318\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aerial image of Waik&#299;k&#299; and Diamond Head. (Photo credit: <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Sea Grant)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Margaret McManus<\/strong>, professor and chair of the Department of Oceanography at <abbr>ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½<\/abbr> M&#257;noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a> is leading aspects of the water quality project. She noted &ldquo;Oftentimes after storms we see brown water along our coasts. This research will allow us to determine the level of terrestrial derived sewage and fecal matter in these waters. We will be working closely with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pacioos.hawaii.edu\/\">Pacific Islands Ocean Observing System<\/a> (<abbr>PacIOOS<\/abbr>) to establish initial test sites. <abbr>PacIOOS<\/abbr> has also contributed instrumentation to support this critical work.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kawela Farrant<\/strong>, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Sea Grant\u2019s newest extension faculty and lifelong North Shore resident is leading the project on the North Shore. Farrant noted &ldquo;Community members and nonprofit groups in this area have a long history of advocating for natural resource protection, sustainability initiatives, climate change adaptation, and Hawaiian cultural preservation. Direct partnership with <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Sea Grant will provide additional financial capacity and technical expertise to initiatives that are strongly wanted, if not driven, by the local community.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>More on the projects<\/h2>\n<p>Through a joint competition with the <a href=\"https:\/\/uscoastalresearch.org\/\">U.S. Coastal Research Program (<abbr>USCRP<\/abbr>)<\/a>, 10 new projects were selected for a total of &#36;3.9 million in funding to translate research into application for communities.
