McClain, <a href=\"https:\/\/appliedsciences.nasa.gov\/what-we-do\/disasters\">disasters program<\/a> manager for NASA\u2019s Earth Science Applied Sciences Program. &ldquo;The technology we have developed will be transformative, enabling early action by communities around the globe&#8212;especially small island communities and developing states that lack the necessary early warning information to protect themselves and their loved ones during flood events.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Need for early warning systems<\/h2>\n<p>Roughly half of the world&#8217;s countries <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2022\/10\/1129502\">lack adequate hazard early warning systems<\/a>, according to a recent study by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction and the World Meteorological Organization.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_170942\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-170942\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/system-pdc-nasa-partnership-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Woman cooking next to a river\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-170942\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/system-pdc-nasa-partnership-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/system-pdc-nasa-partnership-1-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/system-pdc-nasa-partnership-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-170942\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">2022 Pakistan Floods (<abbr>EU<\/abbr> Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>NASA partnered to integrate <abbr>MoM<\/abbr> into the <abbr>PDC<\/abbr>\u2019s global multi-hazard alerting platform <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdc.org\/disasteraware\/\">DisasterAWARE<\/a>. When <abbr>MoM<\/abbr> detects a high likelihood of flooding in a region, DisasterAWARE sends a flood early warning notification to impacted communities, letting them quickly take the steps necessary to save lives and livelihoods. Local authorities may use this information to activate emergency response plans, order evacuations, or deploy response teams and humanitarian relief.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Until now, comprehensive global flood early warnings have not been possible. Either due to limitations in hydrologic monitoring networks, forecast models, or expertise to operate and widely disseminate their results, especially in small and vulnerable countries. <abbr>MoM<\/abbr> will be a game changer,&rdquo; said <abbr>PDC<\/abbr> Deputy Executive Director <strong>Chris Chiesa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For the new technology to be put into use, it must reach the hands of local populations and decision-makers who need it most. The International Federation of Red Cross currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2021\/08\/02\/pdc-joins-with-red-cross\/\">integrates all of <abbr>PDC<\/abbr>\u2019s DisasterAWARE early warning and risk information<\/a> into its Go Platform which provides its 192 national societies and more than 15 million volunteers with critical emergency needs information and the tools they need to provide adequate response.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our decades-long track record of innovating technologies for multi-hazard early warning, risk analysis and impact estimation makes <abbr>PDC<\/abbr> an optimal partner for receiving NASA\u2019s new daily global flood model updates,&rdquo; said <abbr>PDC<\/abbr> Executive Director <strong>Ray Shirkhodai<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>PDC<\/abbr>\u2019s DisasterAWARE platform serves tens of thousands of disaster management and humanitarian assistance professionals worldwide and reaches millions more through <abbr>PDC<\/abbr>\u2019s free public app Disaster Alert.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The operational launch of this new model by the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s Pacific Disaster Center and the NASA Disasters flood team is not only an impressive example of what people can do when they come together to solve hard problems, but also timely and paramount to the climate-change crisis issues at hand,&rdquo; said <abbr>ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½<\/abbr> President <strong>David Lassner<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The business community is also able to access this new flood hazard information for supply chain and continuity of operations planning through DisasterAWARE Enterprise.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>PDC<\/abbr> was recently recognized by the United Nations for its efforts to build resilience through a multi-hazard approach&#8212;receiving the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/05\/26\/un-award-uh-pacific-disaster-center\/\">2022 U.N. Sasakawa Award for Disaster Risk Reduction<\/a>.
