The next month, under the auspices of Canadian University Services Overseas, she began teaching at a high school in Papua New Guinea, and while there, learned to speak Tok Pisin, the local pidgin language. She returned to Canada to complete her masters degree in linguistics at McGill University, focusing her research on the syntax of Ojibwa, an aboriginal language in Western Qu\u00e9bec.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_170301\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-170301\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/pagotto-retirement-2.jpg\" alt=\"Pagotto\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-170301\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/pagotto-retirement-2.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/pagotto-retirement-2-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/pagotto-retirement-2-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-170301\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In the 90s, Pagotto began teaching English composition and linguistics at <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 1980, Pagotto came to <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M&#257;noa as an international student. She received her doctorate in linguistics in December 1987, with a dissertation on Marshallese verbs, and is a co-author of <em>Marshallese Reference Grammar<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>She then continued her career, teaching English at Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr>. Beginning in 1989, Pagotto began teaching English composition and linguistics at <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>, and throughout her long career there served as assistant dean for vocational and distance education; department chair of language arts; assistant dean of arts and sciences and academic support; vice chancellor for academic affairs, interim chancellor, and, on June 8, 2018, she was appointed chancellor.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As soon as I stepped into a classroom in August 1971, I knew education would be my life\u2019s work,&rdquo; said Pagotto. &ldquo;As soon as I started at <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> in fall 1989, I knew this college would be my career home. And, it\u2019s been wonderful. She worked to enhance <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>&#8216;s multicultural offerings through her involvement in <abbr>KAPE<\/abbr> <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">(Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Asian Pacific Emphasis). In the mid-90\u2019s, Pagotto coordinated Teachers Talking to Teachers about Teaching, a professional development program designed to provide a supportive space for more than 30 teachers from multiple departments to share their concerns and their promising practices. In the 2000\u2019s, she created a speaker series called <abbr>THINK<\/abbr> (The Hidden Intellectual Network at <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span>), so named by her colleague <strong>John Rand<\/strong>. <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> faculty and staff were invited to present on their passions and expertise, including the recently minted dissertations of the faculty.<\/p>\n<p>With funding from the Bob and Betty Wo and Jim and Juanita Wo Family Foundations, she shaped a professional development opportunity for faculty and staff, focused on investing in junior members of the academic community, renewing its senior faculty, and promoting the enrichment of all at the state\u2019s community colleges. Pagotto assisted in securing millions of dollars of extramural funding and helped to institutionalize undergraduate research in ways that allowed students to earn credit and faculty to be compensated.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_170303\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-170303\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/pagotto-retirement-4-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Large group off people\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-170303\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/pagotto-retirement-4-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/pagotto-retirement-4-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/pagotto-retirement-4.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-170303\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">For over 20 years, Pagotto coordinated the Wo Learning Champions.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Pagotto extended her influence to the greater community by coordinating the <a href=\"https:\/\/uhccwolc.weebly.com\/\">Wo Learning Champions<\/a> for more than 20 years, serving as a board member of the Community Colleges Leadership Development Initiatives Foundation, and chairing both the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Commission on the Status of Women and the Women Leaders in Higher Education.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Louise may be an Italian Canadian from Montr\u00e9al, but between Papua New Guinea, Marshall Islands, and here in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii,\">Hawai&#699;i,<\/span> she is a Pacific woman at heart,&rdquo; said Emeritus Vice President of <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Community Colleges <strong>John Morton<\/strong>. &ldquo;At the college, what I will remember most about Louise is what she did with the Wo Learning Champions.
