Such activities lead them to reimagine their contribution to knowledge production, augmenting their skills and envisioning possible career paths both in the public and the private sectors,&rdquo; said Tommasi.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_168431\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-168431\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/manoa-CALL-EALL-rare-book-collection-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Students and teacher in a classroom\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-168431\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/manoa-CALL-EALL-rare-book-collection-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/manoa-CALL-EALL-rare-book-collection-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/manoa-CALL-EALL-rare-book-collection.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-168431\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Undergraduate students listen to a presentation about the Lane Collection.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This fall, <abbr>HoMA<\/abbr> Research Associate Kiyoe Minami visited the M\u0101noa campus to present to students about the collection, which features manuscripts such as makeup and hairstyles on trend during the Edo period (1603&#8211;1868), a 400-year-old mathematics manual on geometrics, and recipes for beginner cooks.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It was sort of strange to learn that even if these items were from a few hundred years ago, they showed that the people of the time had similar interests as today, like fashion, health, fortune telling, manga and games,&rdquo; said student <strong>Sho Tanaka<\/strong>. &ldquo;[It] made me think about the importance of preserving, cataloging and displaying these historical items to better understand our history and where we come from.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>HoMA<\/abbr>\u2013<abbr>EALL<\/abbr> collaborative project is meant to draw attention to the ways in which <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s interconnectedness with Japan has, through the movements of the transpacific diaspora, helped shape the Hawaiian Islands\u2019 culture.
