Two fellows from the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> have a unique opportunity to work directly with <span aria-label=\"Hawaiibased\">Hawai&#699;i-based<\/span> organizations with the support of the <a href=\"https:\/\/seagrant.soest.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Sea Grant College Program<\/a> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">(Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Sea Grant) E. Gordon Grau Coastal Resource Management and Policy Fellowship Program (Grau Fellowship).<\/p>\n<p>The fellowships, named in honor of Emeritus Professor <strong>E. Gordon Grau<\/strong>, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Sea Grant\u2019s visionary former director, provide students the chance to obtain relevant policy experience and to pursue career opportunities in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii.\">Hawai&#699;i.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Cuong Tran<\/h2>\n<p>Tran, a recent graduate of the master\u2019s program at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M&#257;noa\u2019s Department of Urban and Regional Planning housed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/socialsciences.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Social Sciences<\/a>, brings his background in helping <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Hawai&#699;i\u2019s<\/span> diverse communities adapt to the future threats of climate change to the <a href=\"https:\/\/ndptc.hawaii.edu\/\">National Disaster Preparedness Training Center<\/a> (<abbr>NDPTC<\/abbr>). As a first time host office, the <abbr>NDPTC<\/abbr> is a perfect fit for Tran who has been pursuing a career in natural disaster management and climate change mitigation since his undergraduate degree at <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M&#257;noa, helping coastal communities plan for climate change impacts.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_167975\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-167975\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/manoa-sea-grant-shayla-waiki-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"woman smiling\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-167975\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/manoa-sea-grant-shayla-waiki-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/manoa-sea-grant-shayla-waiki-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/manoa-sea-grant-shayla-waiki.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-167975\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shayla Waiki, 2022 Grau Fellow<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While a master\u2019s student, he worked with the City and County of Honolulu Office of Climate Change, Sustainability, and Resiliency, and began the process to create a Resilience Hub Action Plan for the island of <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> with the possibility of creating a statewide plan. Tran\u2019s work continues to focus on community engagement and improving conditions for island communities.<\/p>\n<h2>Shayla Waiki<\/h2>\n<p>Waiki is also fortunate to be gaining invaluable experience in her field of water quality and wastewater management during her fellowship at Wastewater Alternatives and Innovations (<abbr>WAI<\/abbr>), a <span aria-label=\"Hawaiibased\">Hawai&#699;i-based<\/span> nonprofit organization that works to protect water quality, reduce sewage pollution, and restore healthy watersheds. WAI hosted its first Grau fellow from 2020&#8211;22 and valued both the opportunity to train the next generation of water quality experts as well as the dedication and commitment of the previous fellow, so it did not hesitate to agree to support Waiki.<\/p>\n<p>As a graduate of <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Hilo\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/tcbes.uhh.hawaii.edu\/\">Tropical Conservation Biology and Environmental Science<\/a> program, she studied the connectivity of on-site sewage disposal systems to the nearshore water quality, and plans to combine her research background with the policy experience she will gain at WAI to pursue a career in environmental law.<\/p>\n<h2>How to apply<\/h2>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Sea Grant continually recruits host offices, and any municipal, state, federal agency or <span aria-label=\"Hawaiibased\">Hawai&#699;i-based<\/span> nonprofit organization that works on coastal or marine research, policy or management is welcome to apply.
