David Ige has released $1.75 million for 39 new instructor positions to help address <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s severe nursing faculty shortage and to support University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> nursing programs statewide. The initiative, which Ige included in his budget request to the state Legislature that lawmakers approved during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/05\/24\/2022-legislative-recap-key-takeaways\/\">2022 legislative session<\/a>, will help <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> graduate more nurses to meet the workforce demands of the state.<\/p>\n<p>A news conference was held on the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa campus on October 13 to discuss the appropriation of recurring funding and its importance. Ige attended along with <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> President <strong>David Lassner<\/strong>, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> State Center for Nursing (<abbr>HSCN<\/abbr>) Director <strong>Laura Reichhardt<\/strong>, <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Nancy Atmospera-Walch School of Nursing Interim Dean <strong>Clementina Ceria-Ulep<\/strong>, state lawmakers and healthcare system leaders who have been supportive of the funding. <\/p>\n<p>There are an estimated 1,000 current nurse vacancies in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, according to the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations. <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> State labor data predicts there is an anticipated growth of nurse demand of an additional 110 positions each year, through 2030. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;COVID-19 created an opportunity to collaborate with <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> President David Lassner and the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> System to ensure our state higher education system is well positioned to help the state respond to this incredible healthcare challenge,&rdquo; said Ige. &ldquo;The $1.75 million I allocated for <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> is an investment which will support the stability and future of nursing education in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The 39 positions will support instruction needs for approximately 230 nursing students. Currently, there are about 770 nursing students enrolled across the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> System: <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Hilo, <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Maui College, <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College, <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> CC.<\/p>\n<h2>Support for state\u2019s largest educator of nurses<\/h2>\n<p><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> System schools educated and trained 59&#37; of the 442 <abbr title=licensed practical nurse\">LPN<\/abbr> and <abbr title=\"registered nurse\">RN<\/abbr> students who graduated from schools throughout <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> in the last academic year. <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> nursing programs make up six of the eight pre-license nursing education programs in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> that prepare students for entry into <abbr>LPN<\/abbr> or <abbr>RN<\/abbr> practice. David Ige with <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Nursing students in the simulation center.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Funding\/position breakdown:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa: $354,767 (8 positions)<\/li>\n<li><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Hilo: $532,150 (12 positions)<\/li>\n<li><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Community Colleges: $842,572 (19 positions)<\/li>\n<li><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>: (9 positions)<\/li>\n<li><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Maui College: (3 positions)<\/li>\n<li><span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>: (3 positions)<\/li>\n<li><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>: (4 positions)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Professional development training: $27,000<\/p>\n<p>In order to retain the new nursing instructors, $27,000 will support their professional development to gain new competencies in nursing education. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The funding will support the incredible contributions <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> nursing schools provide to the state. I\u2019d like to thank Gov. Ige, with the support of our state lawmakers, for investing in our academic workforce in order to improve retention of our highly talented faculty and to enroll qualified students whose dreams are to become a nurse,&rdquo; said Lassner.<\/p>\n<h2>Meeting current, future workforce demands<\/h2>\n<p>Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, state nursing schools were able to graduate an adequate number of nurses to meet workforce needs, according to the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> State Center for Nursing. However, in the last two academic years, there has been a loss of 15&#37; of state-funded nursing positions. In addition, budget constraints prevented schools from receiving funds to hire replacements for faculty who left their positions.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;To regain balance, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> must immediately increase the number of nurses we graduate. It takes 4 years to graduate as a bachelors-prepared nurse. Efforts today will impact our nursing workforce in 4 years. The time to act is now,&rdquo; said Reichhardt, who leads <abbr>HSCN<\/abbr> efforts to respond to nursing workforce shortages.<\/p>\n<h2>Expanding on current initiatives<\/h2>\n<p>The <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> System continues to collaborate and work closely with <abbr>HCSN<\/abbr> and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s healthcare employers to develop strategies to ensure nursing workforce issues are addressed statewide. Students from <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>, <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Maui College and <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> complete a common curriculum to earn an associate degree in nursing, then transition to <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa to earn a bachelor of science in nursing (<abbr>BSN<\/abbr>) from <abbr>NAWSON<\/abbr> in an additional year. <\/li>\n<li>The redesigned <a href=\"https:\/\/nursing.hawaii.edu\/nursing-graduate\/masters\/nursing-education-and-leadership\/\">master\u2019s program in nursing education and leadership<\/a> offered by <abbr>NAWSON<\/abbr> provides expert clinical nurses with the skills to teach students in an academic setting. The first cohort begins in August 2023.<\/li>\n<li>A new 15-credit <a href=\"https:\/\/nursing.hawaii.edu\/graduate-certificate-in-nursing-education\/\">graduate certificate in nursing education program<\/a> offered by <abbr>NAWSON<\/abbr> provides nurses with an opportunity to obtain national nursing certification as a nurse educator, most commonly employed at hospitals to teach clinical nurses. Classes begin in August 2023.<\/li>\n<li>Launched this fall is a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/08\/04\/uhwo-nursing-pathway-to-uhm\/\">bachelor\u2019s nursing pathway for <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> students<\/a>, a unique partnership between <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> and <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. Upon completion of pre-nursing prerequisites at <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, students transfer their credits to enroll in the <abbr>NAWSON<\/abbr> program to earn their <abbr>BSN<\/abbr>. Students will take courses at <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> to reduce travel and receive instruction closer to their home communities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;I&#8217;d like to acknowledge the unified effort between the nursing schools and nursing employers for their commitment to local nursing education, hiring new graduates into the workforce, and ensuring coordinated and close communication that helps us plan for the future,&rdquo; said Reichhardt. <\/p>\n<p><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> is actively recruiting and hiring for the nursing lecture positions.
