A $130,000 innovation grant supported the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/nursing.hawaii.edu\">Nancy Atmospera-Walch School of Nursing<\/a> (<abbr>NAWSON<\/abbr>)\u2019s creation of a telehealth training toolkit that is culturally appropriate, immersive and experiential for healthcare providers and students, so they can provide high quality team-based healthcare. <\/p>\n<p>In April 2020, <abbr>NAWSON<\/abbr> was awarded an innovation grant from the the State of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/governor.hawaii.gov\/top-priorities\/teaching-our-keiki\/\">Governor\u2019s Emergency Education Relief (<abbr>GEER<\/abbr>) fund<\/a>, as part of the federal <abbr>CARES<\/abbr> Act. <abbr>NAWSON<\/abbr> received one of 31 innovation grant awards encompassing <abbr title=\"science, technology, engineering and mathematics\">STEM<\/abbr> education, project-based learning opportunities and leadership development programs. <abbr>NAWSON<\/abbr>\u2019s Telehealth Training grant was one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2021\/08\/10\/grants-programs-covid19-responses\/\">11 <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> System <abbr>GEER<\/abbr> grants<\/a> and was recently successfully completed. <\/p>\n<p><span class=\"blocklink\">Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2021\/08\/10\/grants-programs-covid19-responses\/\">From aerospace to agriculture, grants to <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> programs for COVID responses<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/745592696\/fdaf05f602\">Watch an informational video overview of the <abbr>NAWSON<\/abbr> Telehealth Training grant.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><abbr>GEER<\/abbr> aimed to fund innovative initiatives that address the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on students, families and educators across the state. Initiatives included creating digital equity, providing support for families and distance learning. The grants also supported continuing efforts to provide quality and impactful educational services and to support the ongoing function of schools and campuses.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>NAWSON<\/abbr>\u2019s <strong>Deborah Mattheus<\/strong> and <strong>Lorrie Wong<\/strong> were co-principal investigators on the Telehealth Training <abbr>GEER<\/abbr> grant.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Telehealth has emerged as an important tool for healthcare providers,&rdquo; said Mattheus, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2021\/12\/06\/professor-in-school-health\/\">Nancy Atmospera-Walch Professor in School Health<\/a> and associate professor. &ldquo;By educating nursing students, we can ensure that our graduates are prepared to function utilizing telehealth which can expand quality healthcare to the people of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> without expanding the cost.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Mattheus and Wong accomplished four key deliverables:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Developed a telehealth toolkit for five <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> System nursing programs: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kauai.hawaii.edu\"><span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Community College<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/maui.hawaii.edu\"><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Maui College<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/kapiolani.hawaii.edu\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\"><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Hilo<\/a> and <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. The toolkit is available online and includes: the basics of the telehealth process; training on how to write, facilitate and debrief a telehealth simulation; and pre-recorded telehealth simulation scenarios and videos related to behavioral health, pediatric illness, acute and chronic disease management for elderly; and women&#8217;s health.<\/li>\n<li>Purchased telehealth equipment and software licenses for the five <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> System nursing programs and provided training on use of the equipment.<\/li>\n<li>Trained nursing faculty at the five <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> System nursing programs on the implementation of the telehealth toolkit to optimize student learning.<\/li>\n<li>Evaluated the five <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> System nursing programs trainings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;Our nursing program is always at the forefront of innovation and technology,&rdquo; said Wong, interim associate dean for academic affairs, director of <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Translational Health Science Simulation Center and <abbr>HMSA<\/abbr> distinguished professor. &ldquo;To ensure that our students are prepared for the ever-changing healthcare environment, we quickly integrated telehealth into our nursing curriculum. Telehealth aligns with the existing technology modalities already utilized in our program. We were quite fortunate to receive this grant and were pleased to purchase telehealth equipment and provide training to the other <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> nursing programs.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Faculty at the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> System nursing programs are currently implementing the telehealth equipment and simulation trainings during the 2022\u201323 academic year.
