  {"id":161694,"date":"2022-07-07T14:56:26","date_gmt":"2022-07-08T00:56:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=161694"},"modified":"2024-03-14T22:43:17","modified_gmt":"2024-03-15T08:43:17","slug":"pamela-scheffler-fulbright-scholar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/07\/07\/pamela-scheffler-fulbright-scholar\/","title":{"rendered":"Stingless bees focus of Hawai\u02bbi <abbr>CC<\/abbr> Fulbright Scholar research"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_161686\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-161686\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/hawaii-fulbright-scheffler-p.jpg\" alt=\"2 women\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"size-full wp-image-161686\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/hawaii-fulbright-scheffler-p.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/hawaii-fulbright-scheffler-p-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/hawaii-fulbright-scheffler-p-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-161686\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pamela Scheffler, right, works with a student at the Wailuku River in Hilo.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Community College<\/a> Professor <strong>Pamela Scheffler<\/strong> has been selected as a <a href=\"https:\/\/fulbrightscholars.org\/\">Fulbright Scholar<\/a>, and will travel to Bali, Indonesia to conduct research on bees that could ultimately benefit small farmers.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It\u2019s very exciting to be going to a place so different with so many novel things and unknowns,&rdquo; Scheffler said.<\/p>\n<p>The prestigious and competitive fellowships offered through the Fulbright program allow scholars to conduct research abroad and establish relationships with other scholars and institutions.<\/p>\n<p>Scheffler, whose specialty is ecology, will be working with professors and students at Udayama University to initiate studies on native stingless bee (<em>Trigona spp.<?em>) ecology.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The engineering department has been working on designing bee boxes because Trigona do not have hexagonal combs, so honey extraction is tricky,&rdquo; said Scheffler. &ldquo;This research will be a complementary project, and these ecological studies will help small landholders diversify with agricultural products like honey and propolis and simultaneously promote native biodiversity.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>This is the second time Scheffler, who teaches <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/forestteam\">tropical forest ecosystem and agroforestry management<\/a>, has been selected as a Fulbright Scholar. She studied small farmer agroforestry systems in India in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Bringing first-hand knowledge and experience of new places back to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> students is one of the biggest benefits of being a Fulbright Scholar, said Scheffler, and Bali presents many opportunities to see unique agroforestry systems and more.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;When you have your own experience attached and it\u2019s not just a picture in a textbook but has a story with it, an experience, that makes it exciting for the students, too,&rdquo; Scheffler said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;By Thatcher J.P.
