of tropical lowland dry forest remains since human settlement, according to experts.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_161572\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-161572\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/hawaii-palamanui-forest-dlnr-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"forest\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-161572\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/hawaii-palamanui-forest-dlnr-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/hawaii-palamanui-forest-dlnr-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/hawaii-palamanui-forest-dlnr.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-161572\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">P&#257;lamanui Forest Preserve<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Under the agreement, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>&#8211;P&#257;lamanui and the <abbr>DLNR<\/abbr> Division of Forestry and Wildlife (<abbr>DOFAW<\/abbr>) will collaborate to protect the area from various threats, such as wildfire and destructive animals, while using it as a living laboratory for students and community members.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are thrilled to collaborate with the <abbr>DLNR<\/abbr> and <abbr>DOFAW<\/abbr> to protect and restore this threatened ecosystem,&rdquo; S. Department of the Interior.<\/p>\n<h2>Gov. David Ige got a close-up look at the P&#257;lamanui living laboratory and planted another tree to count toward the <a href=\"https:\/\/governor.hawaii.gov\/newsroom\/dlnr-news-release-state-pledges-one-hundred-million-trees-to-be-conserved-restored-or-grown-by-2030\/\">state\u2019s pledge<\/a> to plant, restore and conserve 100 million trees around the islands by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>That same day, the governor visited the campus, where Elliot Parsons of the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½<\/abbr> Regional Species and Climate Change Management Network showed him the garden named &ldquo;The forest of loved souls,&rdquo; where native trees are being planted to increase their numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Parsons said, &ldquo;We need trees, the Earth needs trees, this island needs trees.
