Developed by two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.himb.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Institute of Marine Biology<\/a> graduate students, the Summer Marine Mammal Intensive Learning Experience (<abbr>SMMILE<\/abbr>) program, a fully funded overnight learning experience, ran from June 12&#8211;18.<\/p>\n<p>Eleven incoming high school juniors and seniors from across <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> participated in the <abbr>SMMILE<\/abbr> program, which was developed by <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Marine Biology Graduate Program <abbr title=\"doctor of philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr> students <strong>Kirby Parnell<\/strong> and <strong>Brijonnay Madrigal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As an underrepresented minority student myself, I know the importance of introducing students to marine mammal science and marine science at an early age to inspire them to potentially pursue the field in the future,&rdquo; said Madrigal.<\/p>\n<div style=\"float:right;clear:right;margin:0 0 0 15px;\"><figure id=\"attachment_160755\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-160755\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/manoa-himb-overnight-smmile-5-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"two girls on dock\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-160755\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-160755\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From left: Kirby Parnell and Brijonnay Madrigal.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n<div style=\"float:right;clear:right;margin:0 0 0 15px;\"><figure id=\"attachment_160753\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-160753\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/manoa-himb-overnight-smmile-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"students pointing at computer\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-160753\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/manoa-himb-overnight-smmile-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/manoa-himb-overnight-smmile-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/manoa-himb-overnight-smmile-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-160753\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">High school students in acoustics lecture.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n<p><abbr>SMMILE<\/abbr> provides an opportunity for underrepresented high school students to learn about marine mammal science, marine protected areas and conservation. Preference was given to Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander high school students because their representation in <abbr title=\"science, technology, engineering and mathematics\">STEM<\/abbr> is among the lowest percentages of any minority group and the field of marine mammalogy reflects this deficit.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is an important opportunity because it will open up their [students\u2019] minds to new career paths that they never would\u2019ve thought of,&rdquo; said Pohakumakamae Kahuanui, a Kapolei High School student who is going into 12th grade. &ldquo;I, for example, never wanted to go to college but now going to this program, I\u2019m thinking about going to college.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Facilitating hands-on learning<\/h2>\n<p>Participants stayed overnight on Moku o <span aria-label=\"Loe\">Lo&#699;e<\/span> in the dormitories for the duration of the program.<\/p>\n<p>High school students had hands-on learning opportunities through guest lectures, training, field trips and workshops throughout the week. Topics covered during the program included: acoustics\/hearing, unmanned aerial vehicles, tagging, population studies, photo ID, stranding\/response and conservation\/management.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_160754\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-160754\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/manoa-himb-overnight-smmile-3-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-160754\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/manoa-himb-overnight-smmile-3-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/manoa-himb-overnight-smmile-3-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/manoa-himb-overnight-smmile-3.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-160754\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dormitories at night.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;Bri, the other co-instructor and I, we are really interested in outreach and education,&rdquo; said Parnell. &ldquo;We had opportunities when we were younger to do fun camps like this to learn about marine science, and we really hope to just involve local students to learn more about marine mammals here in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii.\">Hawai&#699;i.<\/span>&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Upon completing the <abbr>SMMILE<\/abbr> program high school students gain basic knowledge of marine mammals, with a focus on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Hawai&#699;i\u2019s<\/span> marine mammals; applicable skills for studying marine mammals in the field and in human-care facilities; opportunities to network with undergraduate and graduate students, experts and organizations that participate in science-based conservation; and to learn to appreciate the diversity of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Hawai&#699;i\u2019s<\/span> marine mammals.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>SMMILE<\/abbr> is funded by a Marine Mammal Commission grant and a <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Student Equity Excellence and Diversity (<abbr>SEED<\/abbr>) Inclusion, Diversity, Access and Success (<abbr>IDEAS<\/abbr>) grant.
