The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa contributed to <a href=\"https:\/\/nrbhss.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/health_surveys\/Food_Security_report_en.pdf\">international research on food security<\/a> (<small><abbr title=\"portable document format\">PDF<\/abbr><\/small>), or the ability to access and afford food, in Nunavik, the northernmost region of Quebec in Canada. <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_149775\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-149775\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/mano-public-health-pirkle-c-214x300.jpeg\" alt=\"cartherine pirkle\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-149775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/mano-public-health-pirkle-c-214x300.jpeg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/mano-public-health-pirkle-c-93x130.jpeg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/mano-public-health-pirkle-c.jpeg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-149775\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Catherine Pirkle<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Released in May 2022, the population health survey was conducted in 2017 and included more than 1,300 respondents from the 14 villages in Nunavik. More than 90&#37; of the population of Nunavik are Inuit, an important Indigenous group in Canada, said co-author <strong>Catherine Pirkle<\/strong>, associate professor of health policy and management at the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/thompson\/\">Thompson School of Social Work &#38; Public Health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;There are parallels to be made between any community living off the land, and we see a lot of similarities between Inuit peoples and peoples in the Pacific with regard to climate change,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;People who are dependent upon or have strong links to land and water are often at high risk of food insecurity.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Read more <em><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">ÌÇÐÄVlog¹Ù·½<\/abbr> News<\/em> stories on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?s=food+insecurity\">food insecurity<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Report highlights disparity of communities<\/h2>\n<p>The report reveals a drastic disparity in food insecurity in Canada. Food insecurity is highly prevalent among Indigenous peoples in Canada. This report showed it affects 78&#37; of the population in Nunavik, which is predominantly inhabited by Inuit Peoples, compared to 13&#37; of the general population of Canada.<\/p>\n<p>These results mirror findings in the <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> generally, and specifically in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>. <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/advances\/advance-article\/doi\/10.1093\/advances\/nmac008\/6517305?login=true\">Nearly half of American Indian\/ Alaskan Native individuals<\/a> are estimated to be food insecure in the <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr> &ldquo;Our own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiihealthmatters.org\/content\/sites\/hawaii\/2018_Food_Insecurity_Data_Brief.pdf\">research<\/a> (<small><abbr>PDF<\/abbr><\/small>) in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> also documents unacceptable food insecurity disparities with the highest levels observed among Native Hawaiians, Filipinos and other Pacific Islanders,&rdquo; Pirkle said. <\/p>\n<p>In addition, rates of food insecurity are rising in the Nunavik region, with the proportion of individuals in Nunavik reporting they had no food to eat increasing from 22&#37; in 2004 to 35&#37; in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Teenagers 16 years and older, pregnant women, households with children and individuals with low incomes were among those found to be most at risk. <\/p>\n<p>The report was published by the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services.
