These opportunities were made possible by the <a href=\"https:\/\/socialsciences.manoa.hawaii.edu\/study-at-css\/experiential-learning\/service-learning\/mina\/\">M\u0101lama I Na <span aria-label=\"Ahupuaa\">Ahupua&#699;a<\/span><\/a> service-learning program, and <a href=\"https:\/\/socialsciences.manoa.hawaii.edu\/study-at-css\/experiential-learning\/na-kookoo\/\">N\u0101 <span aria-label=\"Kookoo\">Ko&#699;oko&#699;o<\/span><\/a>, a Native Hawaiian leadership program, both housed in University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/socialsciences.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Social Sciences<\/a>. Tynanes, a proud Native Hawaiian, said these programs ignited her interest and passion for her heritage.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_159477\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-159477\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-social-sciences-tynanes-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"person headshot\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-159477\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-social-sciences-tynanes-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-social-sciences-tynanes-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-social-sciences-tynanes.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-159477\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">McKenzie Rose <span aria-label=\"Kealii\">Keali&#699;i<\/span> Hulu Hulu Tynanes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The 22-year-old Makakilo-Kapolei resident is the 2022 College of Social Sciences Outstanding Graduating Senior, who was selected based on the college\u2019s core values of scholarship, leadership and service. Tynanes graduated in spring 2022, double majoring in <a href=\"https:\/\/politicalscience.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">political science<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ethnicstudies.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">ethnic studies<\/a>, with a 3.83 grade point average. She is also well on her way to earning a master\u2019s degree in political science through the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/bam\/\">Bachelor\u2019s and Master\u2019s Degree Pathway<\/a>, which is designed for highly-motivated students seeking to complete a master\u2019s at the lower-cost undergraduate tuition rate.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Earning a master\u2019s degree, and learning from professors who can teach within a grounded <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> context, will give me a better understanding of politics at a local level,&rdquo; Tynanes said.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to her fieldwork, Tynanes was a student intern on the public policy team of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs in her senior year, where she researched local and global land issues, and created a land acknowledgement template.<\/p>\n<h2>Making a difference<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_159478\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-159478\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-social-sciences-tynanes-outstanding-student-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"two people with caps and gowns exchanging a medal\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-159478\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-social-sciences-tynanes-outstanding-student-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-social-sciences-tynanes-outstanding-student-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-social-sciences-tynanes-outstanding-student.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-159478\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dean Denise Eby Konan presents McKenzie Tynanes with the 2022 College of Social Sciences Outstanding Graduating Senior Award.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Outside of the academic realm, she served three years as a resident assistant at Student Housing Services, where she received three awards: for demonstrating aloha, excelling in her resident adviser duties and responsibilities, and for &ldquo;making a difference in the lives of fellow staff and residents.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Tynanes has served as one of the leaders of the 2021&#8211;22 <a href=\"https:\/\/socialsciences.manoa.hawaii.edu\/study-at-css\/experiential-learning\/college-ambassadors\/\">College of Social Sciences Ambassadors<\/a>, who worked directly with the College of Social Sciences Dean <strong>Denise Eby Konan<\/strong> and leadership teams to support the college and its initiatives. For example, in April, she was a greeter at the M\u0101noa Experience open house, which drew more than 3,000 registered attendees who wanted to learn more about the campus. She has also served as a host for visiting students from Japan-based universities including Meiji Gakuin, Tohoku, Konan and Kagoshima.<\/p>\n<h2>Achieving her dream<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/tag\/commencement\/\">More highlights from the commencement ceremonies and our amazing graduates<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Now that Tynanes is graduating with her bachelor\u2019s degree, she is laser-focused on earning her master\u2019s degree so she can follow her dream: to work in geospatial intelligence, a field that her double majors have prepared her for, she believes.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I am so grateful for everything that <abbr>CSS<\/abbr> (College of Social Sciences) has given me, and will continue to give me in graduate school,&rdquo; Tynanes said. &ldquo;I\u2019ve learned that luck comes from hard work.
