While at the Inclusive Science Communication Symposium, Matsuda met Gyasi Alexander, an undergraduate student at the University of Rhode Island, and invited him to participate in a summer internship at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.himb.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Institute of Marine Biology<\/a> (<abbr>HIMB<\/abbr>) in <abbr>SOEST<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/tag\/coral-reefs\/\">More on <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr>\u02bbs research on coral reefs<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Exposing larvae to different temperatures<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_156975\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-156975\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/manoa-himb-student-coral-restoration-2.jpg\" alt=\"students working on computer\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-156975\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/manoa-himb-student-coral-restoration-2.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/manoa-himb-student-coral-restoration-2-130x130.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-156975\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ariana Huffmyer (left) and Gyasi Alexander (middle) working in the laboratory.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The team\u2019s approach was to start with gametes collected during mass spawning events and rear them to the larval stage, with the long term goal of planting more coral on the reef.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Although this process can provide more genetic diversity to the reef than fragmentation practices alone, it takes considerable time, effort and capital, and the downstream survival of the corals may be impacted by ocean warming events,&rdquo; said Matsuda who is now a postdoctoral fellow at the Shedd Aquarium. &ldquo;With this study, we wanted to test whether exposing larvae to different temperatures would both increase larval survival and settlement, and importantly, if exposure to elevated temperatures as larvae would lead to increased thermal tolerance, that is, higher survival, at the juvenile stage.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;However, we do not have a good understanding of the degree, time, and profile of stress required to produce positive carry over effects and, if the effects are produced, how long they last,&rdquo; added Huffmyer, now a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Rhode Island.<\/p>\n<p>In their experiments, the researchers, including <abbr>HIMB<\/abbr> coral ecologist Josh Hancock, found that elevating temperature to simulate future ocean warming did not improve larval survival and did not improve survival after larval settlement.
