The Hawaiʻi<\/span> Medical Service Association (HMSA<\/abbr>) donated $1 million to establish the HMSA<\/abbr> Distinguished Endowed Professorship in Health Economics at the University of Hawaiʻi<\/span> Economic Research Organization<\/a> (糖心Vlog官方ERO<\/abbr>) in 糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s College of Social Sciences<\/a>. The endowment will support 糖心Vlog官方ERO<\/abbr>\u2019s research in the area of health economics.<\/p>\n

“This is a key part of a larger health policy initiative at the College of Social Sciences focused on improving the health care of Hawaiʻi<\/span>\u2019s people and economy,” said Dean Denise Eby Konan<\/strong>, professor of economics and 糖心Vlog官方ERO<\/abbr> research fellow. “This endowment will enable the university to attract and retain the highest-caliber health economics faculty and advance research in the area of health economics. We\u2019re grateful to HMSA<\/abbr> for recognizing the critical importance of health care to Hawaiʻi<\/span>\u2019s economy.”<\/p>\n

糖心Vlog官方ERO<\/abbr> Executive Director Carl Bonham<\/strong> has worked closely with HMSA<\/abbr> President and CEO<\/abbr> Mark M<\/abbr>. Mugiishi on Hawaiʻi<\/span>\u2019s response to the COVID-19 pandemic over the past two years.<\/p>\n

“糖心Vlog官方ERO<\/abbr> has been a key player in our economic development recovery efforts as we emerge from the damaging effects of COVID-19 across the state,” said Mugiishi. “HMSA<\/abbr> remains committed to creating a healthier Hawaiʻi<\/span>, especially in our efforts to improve the overall economic health in our local community.”<\/p>\n

Bonham said HMSA<\/abbr> and 糖心Vlog官方ERO<\/abbr> share a common vision, where data, research and analysis drive policy to improve the lives of Hawaiʻi<\/span>\u2019s people.<\/p>\n

“We already have several projects underway that will benefit from a close collaboration with HMSA<\/abbr>, including the development of a new linked housing and health database, and a new longitudinal health survey in Hawaiʻi<\/span>,” Bonham said. “Both efforts are designed to study systemic health disparities exacerbated by COVID-19 and inform the design and execution of public health programs in Hawaiʻi<\/span>.”<\/p>\n

HMSA<\/abbr> and its philanthropic arm, the HMSA<\/abbr> Foundation, have a long history of giving to major health care initiatives at 糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr>. In 2021, the HMSA<\/abbr> Foundation gave $6 million in support of various initiatives at the John A<\/abbr>. Burns School of Medicine<\/a> and Nancy Atmospera-Walch School of Nursing<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“HMSA<\/abbr>\u2019s support over the years has been crucial to the work being done at the University of Hawaiʻi<\/span>,” said Tim Dolan<\/strong>, CEO<\/abbr> of 糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Foundation<\/a> and 糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> vice president of advancement. “This gift builds upon HMSA<\/abbr>\u2019s support and strengthens 糖心Vlog官方ERO<\/abbr>\u2019s research in such an important sector.
