The special issue titled &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.publish.csiro.au\/pc\/#CurrentIssue\">Transforming Conservation Biology Through Indigenous Perspectives<\/a>,&rdquo; edited by University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa researchers <strong>Kawika Winter<\/strong> and <strong>Melissa Price<\/strong>, and Anne-Marie Jackson of the University of Otago (Aotearoa New Zealand), features papers by Indigenous authors from <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> and across the Pacific.<\/p>\n<p>Conservation biology, a field of scientific study aimed at saving endangered species and their habitat, has been publicly criticized as racist, due to the exclusion of Indigenous people from their lands and waters during the establishment of protected areas such as national parks and marine protected areas, and to the racist views of some of the founding fathers of the field, such as John Muir, the founder of the Sierra Club, and John James Audubon, the namesake of the Audubon Society. <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_154329\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-154329\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/manoa-nrem-aeo-bird.jpg\" alt=\"aeo bird\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-154329\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/manoa-nrem-aeo-bird.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/manoa-nrem-aeo-bird-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/manoa-nrem-aeo-bird-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-154329\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span aria-label=\"Aeo\">Ae&#699;o<\/span> (Hawaiian Stilt) are being downlisted from Endangered to Threatened due to recovering numbers following conservation efforts.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;Recent events have sparked public interest regarding the historical and ongoing challenges regarding diversity, equity, inclusion and justice in the conservation community.
