They eventually went their own ways and, now, 41 years, two kids and one business after that first encounter, Ken and Donna Hayashida are making a substantial personal investment in their alma mater, with gifts totaling $250,000 to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eng.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Engineering<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/nursing.hawaii.edu\/\">Nancy Atmospera-Walch School of Nursing<\/a>, to ensure other students can get the same quality education they received and to invest in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to a $250,000 gift to the College of Engineering from KAI Hawaii <abbr title=\"Incorporated\">Inc<\/abbr>., the structural engineering company founded by Ken in 1995, the couple has committed a total of $500,000 to <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We\u2019ve been very blessed and fortunate in our lives and lots of it has to do with the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>,&rdquo; said Ken, a 1983 College of Engineering alumnus. &ldquo;The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> has provided a great education.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>While the couple had always planned to make a gift to <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> as part of their estate planning, the COVID-19 pandemic put such planning in sharp relief and they decided to move up their timetable.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The last few years have changed how we see life and the world as a couple,&rdquo; Donna said. &ldquo;The university needs our help now more than ever, so why wait? The time to give back is now. We\u2019re thinking about the future of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>. Our community is our <span aria-label=\"ohana\">&#699;ohana<\/span>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Giving back to <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_153626\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-153626\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/manoa-engineering-nursing-hayashida-family-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"four people smiling at the camera\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-153626\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/manoa-engineering-nursing-hayashida-family-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/manoa-engineering-nursing-hayashida-family-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/manoa-engineering-nursing-hayashida-family.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-153626\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ken and Donna Hayashida, with their sons Kai and Noah<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/giving.uhfoundation.org\/funds\/20981403\">Ken and Donna Hayashida Foundation Nursing Scholarship Endowment<\/a> will support nursing students by helping to pay for costs associated with attendance such as tuition, books and fees. The <a href=\"https:\/\/giving.uhfoundation.org\/funds\/20981303\">Ken and Donna Hayashida Foundation Leadership Endowment<\/a> at the College of Engineering will support student leadership activities, specifically the college\u2019s Leadership Seminar Series and other events linking students with community leaders. A separate $250,000 gift from KAI Hawaii will endow a new <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/uh-vip\/\">Vertically Integrated Project<\/a> related to sustainability and resilience.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Ken and Donna\u2019s gift is a special reminder of how nurses make a difference in so many lives every single day. Their endowment will ensure generations of nursing students receive needed scholarships to stay in school and focus on their studies,&rdquo; said <strong>Clementina <abbr>D<\/abbr>. Ceria-Ulep<\/strong>, interim dean of the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Nancy Atmospera-Walch School of Nursing. &ldquo;We are forever grateful for their gift and for their dedication to educating our future nurses.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Ken and Donna have been longtime supporters of the university as a whole, but especially the College of Engineering and School of Nursing. Having alumni like the Hayashidas giving back to their alma mater the way they have is truly humbling to us because our success as a university really lies with our alums,&rdquo; said <strong>Brennon Morioka<\/strong>, dean of the College of Engineering. &ldquo;So our work is cut out for us to ensure we are continuing to uphold the quality of education we provide our students while also developing new and creative opportunities for them to succeed.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Value of education<\/h2>\n<p>Both Ken\u2019s and Donna\u2019s grandparents and great grandparents immigrated to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> to work on plantations. Both of their fathers were the first in their families to graduate from college and both graduated from <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr>&#8212;Ken\u02bbs father, <strong>Kazu Hayashida<\/strong>, was an engineer who served as director of the State Department of Transportation, and Donna\u2019s father, <strong>William Lau<\/strong>, was a pathology medical technologist at Kuakini Medical Center.
