Their relatives attended the ceremony to receive the award.<\/p>\n<p>The names of Ahn, Nodie Kim and other Korean immigrants to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> who advocated for Korean independence were discovered through extensive research through a project from the Center for Korean Studies called &ldquo;Korean Immigration History and Diaspora Studies.&rdquo; The research resulted in multiple awards to women in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> such as Ahn and Nodie Kim in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I am so glad to see the hidden women patriots being recognized by President Moon,&rdquo; said <strong>Tae-Ung Baik<\/strong>, Center for Korean Studies director and professor of law. &ldquo;This award of the Order of Merits was a result of year-long efforts of the researchers including <strong>Duk Hee Lee Murabayashi<\/strong> at the Center for Korean Studies. President Moon&#8217;s visit is the second visit of a South Korean president to the Center since 1981, which clearly attests the excellence of the research being led here.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_148516\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-148516\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/manoa-korean-studies-lassner-president-moon-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people gathered around two people shaking hands\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-148516\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/manoa-korean-studies-lassner-president-moon-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/manoa-korean-studies-lassner-president-moon-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/manoa-korean-studies-lassner-president-moon.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-148516\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> President David Lassner shakes hands with South Korean President Moon Jae-in.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Center for Korean Studies at <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa is the largest Korean studies research institution in all the Americas and boasts more than 40 Korean studies professors and experts conducting academic research and education.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony was limited to about 30 people due to COVID-19 restrictions. <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> President <strong>David Lassner<\/strong>, <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Provost <strong>Michael Bruno<\/strong>, <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/call\/\">College of Arts, Languages &#38; Letters<\/a> Dean <strong>Peter Arnade<\/strong> were among the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> officials who attended and greeted President Moon when he arrived.<\/p>\n<h2>More about the awardees<\/h2>\n<p>Born in Pyongyang, North Korea, Ahn graduated from Ewha Hakdang School in 1913 and Japan Women\u2019s Seminary in Yokohama in 1918, before teaching at Pyongyang Women\u2019s Seminary. She came to Honolulu in January 1919 and was active in most Korean organizations in the state, including serving as a representative to the United Welfare Fund Drive, chairperson of the Korean <abbr title=\"Young Women's Christian Association\">YWCA<\/abbr>, president of the Korean Women\u2019s Relief Society, president of Women Kuk Min Hur (Korean National Association) and president of the Ewha Women\u2019s University Alumnae Association of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>. Ahn was also a member of the Korean Chamber of Commerce, Women\u2019s Service Group of the Methodist Church, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Chapter of the Korean Independence Party of Patriotic Women\u2019s Society, Pan Pacific and Southeast Asian Women\u2019s Association, Post-War Women\u2019s Relief Organization.<\/p>\n<p>Nodie Kim grew up in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> after coming to the islands in 1905 with her parents. After graduating from Oberlin College in Ohio in 1918, she became the principal of the Korean Christian Institute, to which she devoted much of her time until 1945. She was active in both church and community organizations, serving as the president of the Korean Ladies Relief Society, manager and liaison officer of the Dongji Hoi, trustee and treasurer of Korean Missions in Honolulu, trustee of the Korean Christian Church, and director of the Korean Old Men\u2019s Home.
