Helen Torigoe is an instructional designer at <a href=\"http:\/\/kapiolani.hawaii.edu\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College<\/a>. In 2016, she created the Teaching Online Prep Program (<abbr>TOPP<\/abbr>) to promote instructor preparation and online community building through a collaboration between teaching faculty and instructional designers. She and her <abbr>TOPP<\/abbr> team have given teaching new meaning in their support of distance education (<abbr>DE<\/abbr>), bringing student learning and achievement to a creative and dynamic forefront using online tools.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_148480\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-148480\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/kapiolani-torigoe-h-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"headshot\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-148480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/kapiolani-torigoe-h-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/kapiolani-torigoe-h-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/kapiolani-torigoe-h.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-148480\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Helen Torigoe<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Her vision for building a collaborative online community between teaching faculty and instructional designers, has extended beyond the campus. This year, Torigoe was awarded the 2021 Western Regional Outstanding Service Award from the University Professional and Continuing Education Association (<abbr>UPCEA<\/abbr>) in Washington, D.C. The <abbr>TOPP<\/abbr> team also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/01\/31\/kapiolani-topp-honor-2020\/\">won a national award from the <abbr>UPCEA<\/abbr> last year<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Torigoe said, &ldquo;The success of distance education at <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> is due to the collaborative efforts of many: our amazing faculty and staff, supportive administration, talented <abbr>DE<\/abbr> team and, most of all, our resilient students. I am honored to be a part of the team and I\u2019m grateful that I can serve <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> &#699;ohana.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>To convey her appreciation, she created a mahalo video and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5zX2or_itZ8&#038;ab_channel=HelenTorigoe\">posted it to YouTube<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>More on TOPP<\/h2>\n<p>The TOPP program just graduated its 15th cohort and welcomes anyone preparing to teach online or hybrid for a <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> campus.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2016, <abbr>TOPP<\/abbr> has trained 182 faculty members from eight <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> campuses, bringing together seasoned tenured faculty, new tenure-track faculty and lecturers from many backgrounds and disciplines. <abbr>TOPP<\/abbr> has been instrumental in the pre-COVID growth of online learning and meeting the high demand during COVID and has allowed the college to address the needs of full-time, part-time and non-traditional students.<\/p>\n<p>Torigoe was also awarded the 2019 Wo Change Agent Award for promoting diversity, access and inclusion in the online environment for both students and faculty members who have transitioned to online learning.
