Reaching gold was a byproduct of that effort.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_147918\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-147918\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/west-oahu-ahs-building-leed-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"outside of building\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-147918\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/west-oahu-ahs-building-leed-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/west-oahu-ahs-building-leed-1-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/west-oahu-ahs-building-leed-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-147918\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Photo credit: Perkins &#38; Will)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <abbr>AHS<\/abbr> Building was gold-certified on June 16, and its new plaque was installed on September 2 in the lobby of the administration wing.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <abbr>USGBC<\/abbr> website, projects pursuing <abbr>LEED<\/abbr> certification earn points for green building strategies across several categories. Based on the number of points achieved, a project earns one of four <abbr>LEED<\/abbr> rating levels: certified, silver, gold or platinum.<\/p>\n<p>Among the <abbr>AHS<\/abbr> Building\u2019s green features:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The ecological design and construction work included bioretention systems and rainwater catchment for managing stormwater onsite and the construction of an onsite greywater treatment system treating the building sink water and condensate recovery for reuse as subsurface drip irrigation.<\/li>\n<li>All the water conservation gardens are interactive and can be utilized as educational features by both the campus students and staff.<\/li>\n<li>To reduce energy consumption, the building features an 89 <abbr>kW<\/abbr> <abbr>DC<\/abbr> photovoltaic system on the rooftop, high efficiency <abbr title=\"heating, ventilation and air conditioning\">HVAC<\/abbr> systems and 100&#37; <abbr>LED<\/abbr> lighting.<\/li>\n<li>An astounding 97&#37; of regularly occupied spaces are naturally daylit and 96&#37; of those spaces have access to outdoor views of the beautiful <span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> mountains and <span aria-label=\"Ewa\">&#699;Ewa<\/span> plains. Natural light is more pleasing, healthful and psychologically beneficial than artificial light.
