David Ige and <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> President David Lassner.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In recognition of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhcancercenter.org\/50years\">50 years of progress<\/a> and its 25th year of continuous designation by the National Cancer Institute (<abbr>NCI<\/abbr>), the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhcancercenter.org\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Cancer Center<\/a> celebrated its &ldquo;golden&rdquo; anniversary on Saturday, August 14, at its facility in <span aria-label=\"Kakaako\">Kaka&#699;ako<\/span>. Legislators, community partners, and <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> and <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Cancer Center senior leadership attended the hybrid event to highlight all that the cancer center has accomplished since its establishment in 1971. <\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Cancer Center has made seminal discoveries in the areas of cancer biology, epidemiology, prevention and treatment, proving itself to be an invaluable asset to the state. After 50 years of cancer research, education and community outreach, the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Cancer Center has earned its place as one of the leading cancer research institutions in the nation and the world. <\/p>\n<p>The center also continues to be an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2021\/03\/30\/fed-biomed-funding-boosts-economy\">economic boost<\/a> for the State of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>. In fiscal year 2020, the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Cancer Center and <a href=\"http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\">John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a> accounted for about 95&#37; of the $63 million awarded to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> from the National Institute for Health that directly supported 1,298 jobs and generated $191 million in economic activity in 2020.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Related <em><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> News<\/em> story:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2021\/01\/15\/uh-cancer-center-50th-anniversary\/\">50 years of progress at <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Cancer Center<\/a>, January 15, 2021<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Among those in attendance at the event was <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> President <strong>David Lassner<\/strong>. He acknowledged and thanked those past and present who were responsible for advancing the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Cancer Center to where it is today. &ldquo;Mahalo for five decades of committed and groundbreaking cancer research for humanity,&rdquo; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Held in person and virtually via Zoom, attendees also heard messages from Gov. David Ige, Lt. Gov. Josh Green, <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> congressional members, <abbr>NCI<\/abbr> Director Norman E. Sharpless, state legislators, community partners and <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Cancer Center leadership, and viewed  and <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/kq6dPknS8Ic\">viewed a video<\/a> showcasing the blessing of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhcancercenter.org\/about-us\/newsroom\/639-uh-cancer-center-project-will-diversify-the-hawaii-economy\">Early Phase Clinical Research Center<\/a> construction site. <\/p>\n<h2>New interim director introduced<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_146425\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-146425\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/cancer-center-50th-ramos.jpeg\" alt=\"ramos at the podium\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-146425\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/cancer-center-50th-ramos.jpeg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/cancer-center-50th-ramos-214x300.jpeg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/cancer-center-50th-ramos-93x130.jpeg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-146425\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Joe W. Ramos<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>During the event, longtime <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Cancer Center faculty member <strong>Joe W. Ramos<\/strong> was introduced as the institution\u2019s newly appointed interim director and highlighted some of the center\u2019s significant research achievements. Ramos became interim director on August 1, after highly regarded former director, <strong>Randall Holcombe<\/strong>, stepped down from his position at <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> to lead University of Vermont Cancer Center\u2019s effort to gain <abbr>NCI<\/abbr>-designation. Faculty and staff members are looking forward to continuing the important work of the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Cancer Center under Ramos\u2019 leadership as the search for a new director begins. <\/p>\n<p>Ramos said, &ldquo;This event is to recognize the extraordinary staff and faculty&#8212;past and present&#8212;who have worked together to make enduring contributions to better preventing, diagnosing, and treating cancer in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and the world. In partnership with members of the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Cancer Consortium and the greater <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> oncology community, collaborators across <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr>, and our legislature, we have made a difference for the people of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>. Many challenges remain but we are passionate and committed to continuing this work into the next 50 years.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<h2>Then and now<\/h2>\n<p>The <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Cancer Center is an organized research unit within <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa that was originally part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbrc.hawaii.edu\/\">Pacific Biosciences Research Center<\/a> in 1971 before it was established as its own independent research institute by the <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Board of Regents in 1981.<\/p>\n<p>Its state-of-the-art facility in <span aria-label=\"Kakaako\">Kaka&#699;ako<\/span> was completed in 2013 and is home to 300 research faculty and staff, including some of the nation\u2019s leading cancer experts.
