  {"id":1461,"date":"2011-11-05T00:34:16","date_gmt":"2011-11-05T00:34:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=1461"},"modified":"2021-06-03T14:49:57","modified_gmt":"2021-06-04T00:49:57","slug":"gear-up-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2011\/11\/05\/gear-up-grant\/","title":{"rendered":"GEAR UP grant to aid <span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> coast students"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_1579\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1579\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/p20-grads.jpg\" alt=\"students in graduation garb and lei\" title=\"p20-grads\" width=\"300\" height=\"188\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1579\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1579\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">GEAR UP promotes student success in college.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>&#8211;West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/a> has been awarded a seven-year, $2.3 million grant from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ed.gov\">U.S. Department of Education<\/a>&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.ed.gov\/programs\/gearup\/index.html\">Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs<\/a> (<abbr>GEAR UP<\/abbr>) that will support a collaborative effort of public institutions and community partners to increase the number of <span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> coast students going to college.<\/p>\n<p>Called Project Holomua, the collaboration of partners including <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, Kamehameha Schools, American Savings Bank and the Nanakuli-<span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> complex schools aims to improve the academic achievement and college-going rates of students in one of the state&#8217;s highest need areas.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Holomua means &lsquo;moving up&rsquo; and provides a great opportunity for <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> to enhance the education opportunities for <span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> coast students from Grade 7&#8211;12 and on into the college years,&rdquo; said <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Interim Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Joe Mobley, grant principal investigator. &ldquo;The goal is to increase the percentage of students going on to college from current single digit percentages up to 75 percent for participating students.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> will provide dual credit courses, additional advanced placement courses, counseling, mentoring, test preparation, academic support, advising, credit recovery courses, professional development, college visits, a student leadership conference and financial literacy programs to a cohort of students from Nanakuli High and Intermediate School, <span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> Intermediate and <span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> High School.
