(Photo courtesy: Ram Chandran)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hundreds of speakers, panelists and participants gathered virtually to celebrate the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2021\/06\/08\/internet-technology-celebrates-50-years\/\">50th anniversary of ALOHAnet with a symposium<\/a> commemorating the pioneering system\u2019s impact on technology worldwide. It was the birth of the personal computer and the whole notion of connecting individual devices all around the campus, initially, and then all around the state,&rdquo; Ige said. &ldquo;Today\u2019s 50th anniversary celebration commemorates the past, the present, and most importantly, embraces the inspiration of the future of the State of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Pono Shim, president and <abbr title=\"Chief Executive Officer\">CEO<\/abbr> of <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Economic Development Board (<abbr>OEDB<\/abbr>), described the impact of ALOHAnet in <abbr>OEDB<\/abbr>\u2019s mission to be a leading agent in the growth, retention and recruitment of businesses that support appropriate jobs for the people of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Keynote presentations honored the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/12\/04\/in-memoriam-norman-abramson\/\">late <strong>Norman Abramson<\/strong><\/a>, who died in December 2020. Abramson co-created ALOHAnet, and served as a professor of electrical engineering and chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ics.hawaii.edu\/\">Information and Computer Sciences Department<\/a>. Presentations were delivered by Abramson\u2019s wife, Joan; <strong>Frank Kuo<\/strong>, fellow ALOHAnet co-creator; Vint Cerf, Google\u2019s chief internet evangelist and &ldquo;Father of the Internet&rdquo;; and Robert Kahn, chairman, <abbr>CEO<\/abbr> and president of the Corporation for National Research Initiatives.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_143783\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-143783\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/manoa-engineering-alohanet-technical-staff-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"four people in boxes on screen\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-143783\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/manoa-engineering-alohanet-technical-staff-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/manoa-engineering-alohanet-technical-staff-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/manoa-engineering-alohanet-technical-staff.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-143783\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ALOHAnet technical staff shares their memories of working on the project.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The first panel featured three College of Engineering alumni who worked on the ALOHAnet team, <strong>Alan Okinaka<\/strong>, <strong>Chris Harrison<\/strong> and <strong>Dennis Streveler<\/strong>. They shared fond memories of working on ALOHAnet and what the experience has done for them in their careers. This panel was moderated by Professor <strong>Anthony Kuh<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We define technology as the application of basic science, but at ALOHAnet we looked at the application of technology and that was really exciting,&rdquo; said Okinaka, who worked on ALOHAnet from 1969&#8211;76. &ldquo;When I left in 1976, I went to <abbr>GTE<\/abbr> Hawaiian Tel, the thing that got me was we were going into data communications and even there, what I had learned from working with ALOHAnet stayed with me.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Two panels followed on the impact of ALOHAnet on academia and the tech industry. Tony Ephremides, University of Maryland College Park professor moderated the first panel and Monisha Ghosh, former Federal Communications Commission CTO and current professor at the University of Chicago, moderated the second.<\/p>\n<h2>Endowed scholarship honoring Abramson<\/h2>\n<p>A new endowed scholarship in Abramson\u2019s name was announced at the symposium. The Norman Abramson ALOHANet Endowed Scholarship will benefit graduate students interested in research related to wireless data networks. The endowment was started by a group of people involved with ALOHAnet who loved and respected Abramson.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/NormAbramson\">糖心Vlog官方 <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Foundation\u2019s website to learn more or donate<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;Having an endowed scholarship under Norm\u2019s name&#8212;knowing that it\u2019s there to support students in their pursuits of education and knowledge&#8212;goes beyond just the academics in the classroom. It\u2019s really about supporting the people,&rdquo; Morioka said.<\/p>\n<h2>ALOHAnet\u2019s impact on students<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>It is encouraging to see students know that just because we\u2019re here in the middle of the Pacific&#8212;one of the most isolated land masses on Earth&#8212;that some of the greatest things can be developed right here at home.<br \/>&#8212;Morioka<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Morioka said the College of Engineering faculty and staff often talk about ALOHAnet with students, and their reactions start with amazement discovering that all wireless communications began at <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Then it becomes an inspirational aspect,&rdquo; Morioka said. &ldquo;It\u2019s &lsquo;wow, we did it before.
