{"id":143126,"date":"2021-06-04T17:00:05","date_gmt":"2021-06-05T03:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=143126"},"modified":"2021-09-23T15:42:21","modified_gmt":"2021-09-24T01:42:21","slug":"maunakea-telescope-one-step-closer-to-decommissioning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2021\/06\/04\/maunakea-telescope-one-step-closer-to-decommissioning\/","title":{"rendered":"Maunakea telescope one step closer to decommissioning"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_111585\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-111585\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/system-caltech-telescope.jpg\" alt=\"The California Institute of Technology Submillimeter Observatory\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"size-full wp-image-111585\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/system-caltech-telescope.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/system-caltech-telescope-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/system-caltech-telescope-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-111585\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The California Institute of Technology Submillimeter Observatory<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) Submillimeter Observatory (<abbr>CSO<\/abbr>), one of five Maunakea telescopes that the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> says will be removed from the summit in the next decade, is a step closer to decommissioning.<\/p>\n<p>The Maunakea Management Board (<abbr>MKMB<\/abbr>) unanimously approved an Environmental Assessment (<abbr>EA<\/abbr>) draft as part of the Site Decommission Plan for <abbr>CSO<\/abbr> on Monday, May 31.<\/p>\n<p>Caltech is responsible for the cost of decommissioning and, as part of the process, has completed an archeological assessment, a cultural setting analysis, a hydrogeological evaluation, a biological inventory, a biological setting analysis, a traffic analysis and an asbestos\/lead paint\/mold survey.<\/p>\n<p>Along with completing the draft <abbr>EA<\/abbr>, which describes the site as well as the potential impacts of the decommissioning process, <abbr>CSO<\/abbr> has also completed a historic preservation review, Draft Mitigation\/Monitoring Plan and Decommissioning Funding Plan.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Related <em><abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> News<\/em> story:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/02\/20\/decommissioning-2-maunakea-telescopes\/\">Decommissioning of 2 Maunakea telescopes expected to be complete by 2023<\/a>, February 20, 2020<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Hilo <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/maunakea\/\">Center for Maunakea Stewardship<\/a> (<abbr>CMS<\/abbr>, formerly known as the Office of Maunakea Management) is working to enhance a stronger foundation of stewardship on the mauna which includes proper decommissioning of telescopes.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<abbr>CMS<\/abbr> is pleased the decommissioning process is on-track and progressing,&rdquo; said <abbr>CMS<\/abbr> Executive Director <strong>Greg Chun<\/strong>. &ldquo;The privilege of extending the university\u2019s educational mission through astronomy on Maunakea comes with a deeply felt kuleana and decommissioning is a critical expression of that.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>CSO<\/abbr> and <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Hilo\u2019s H\u014dk\u016b <span aria-label=\"Kea\">Ke&#699;a<\/span> teaching telescope are the first two observatories to undertake the decommissioning process on <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr>-managed Maunakea lands. The decommissioning of H\u014dk\u016b <span aria-label=\"Kea\">Ke&#699;a<\/span> is anticipated to be completed in mid-to-late 2023. The <abbr>CSO<\/abbr> deconstruction and site restoration work is tentatively scheduled to be completed by late 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The 2010 Decommissioning Plan for the Maunakea Observatories, a sub-plan of the Maunakea Comprehensive Management Plan, describes the four-step decommissioning process for the removal of an observatory, followed by restoration of the site to its original state, to the greatest extent possible.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>CMS<\/abbr> is responsible for <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr>-managed lands on Maunakea, including the decommissioning process and is coordinating with the State of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and the Department of Land and Natural Resources.
