Leeward Community College<\/a> holds a Semester of Shakespeare 2013 featuring a lineup of four public lectures and activities. This year’s events are organized around Shakespeare’s gender-bending comedy Twelfth Night<\/em>.<\/p>\n

A 2008 winner of the Wo Innovation in Teaching Award and brainchild of Leeward CC<\/abbr> literature professors Susan Lum<\/strong> and Michael Nester<\/strong>, the Semester of Shakespeare seeks to deepen and to animate students’s engagements with the Stratford bard by providing students a venue to showcase their research and creative energies. <\/p>\n

All events are open to the public and, with the exception of the performance of Twelfth Night<\/em> in the Leeward CC<\/abbr> Lab Theatre, are free.<\/p>\n

Semester of Shakespeare events<\/h2>\n

  • Wednesday, February 27, 9–9:50 a.m., Leeward CC<\/abbr> Theatre Mainstage—Leeward CC<\/abbr> theatre actor and student producer Jonathan Reyn<\/strong> leads a discussion, “Cross-Dressed Lovers,” on aspects of cross-dressing in theatre as well as demonstrates female-to-male drag transformations.<\/li>\n
  • Monday, March 18, 11–11:45 a.m., Leeward CC<\/abbr> lab theatre—“Pidgin Shakespeare,” features renowned local actor, playwright and director Troy Apostol who shares his experiences of working on a pidgin adaptation of Twelfth Night<\/em>, as well as discusses the finer points of adapting Shakespeare’s work to Hawaiʻi<\/span> settings.<\/li>\n
  • April 11–13 and 18–20, 8 p.m., Leeward CC<\/abbr> Lab Theatre—Directed by Leeward CC<\/abbr> Theatre instructor Betty Burdick<\/strong>, the student-generated production of Twelfth Night<\/em> will feature concepts and performances by students of Drama 260, Dramatic Performance. Tickets are $10.<\/li>\n
  • Wednesday, April 17, 9:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m., Leeward CC<\/abbr> Eucalyptus Courtyard—“A Day in Illyria” features student-created displays depicting concepts related to both Twelfth Night<\/em> and the life and times of Shakespeare’s era. Accompanying the student presentations will be music by the Royal Hawaiian Band and the Leeward CC<\/abbr> Vocal Ensemble, 9:45–10:45 a.m., and performances of scenes from the Drama 260 production of Twelfth Night, 12–12:30 p.m.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
