The in-person three-hour &ldquo;Digital Readiness&rdquo; classes are open to all <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> residents 18 years and older who want to improve their digital literacy. The course is designed to help those with little or no computer knowledge to obtain the skills necessary to continue learning at home or at work.<\/p>\n<p>The free computer classes are part of the Workforce Resiliency Initiative, a plan to help upskill <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Hawai&#699;i\u2019s<\/span> workforce to be ready for anything the future brings. The initiative is a partnership between the state\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/labor.hawaii.gov\/wdc\/\">Workforce Development Council<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.librarieshawaii.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> State Libraries<\/a>, the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Community Colleges and the <a href=\"https:\/\/dbedt.hawaii.gov\/\">Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/uhcc-digital-readiness-4-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"person standing in front of screen\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-140815\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/uhcc-digital-readiness-4-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/uhcc-digital-readiness-4-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/uhcc-digital-readiness-4.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;There are so many options and opportunities for people who have digital and computer skills and so many barriers and hurdles for those without,&rdquo; said Leslie Wilkins, chair of the Workforce Development Council. &ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> must proactively address the digital skills gap we face in our islands to ensure that everyone is able to work and live life to the fullest. It\u2019s not just about jobs and careers; it\u2019s about the well-being of all of our communities.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>While digital literacy and computer skills have always been important, COVID-19 revealed just how critical this knowledge is for work, livelihood and day-to-day living. Shortly after the first printing press was introduced to the islands in 1820, King Kamehameha <abbr title=\"Roman numeral three\">III<\/abbr> declared, &ldquo;He aupuni palapala <span aria-label=\"kou\">ko&#699;u<\/span>,&rdquo; meaning &ldquo;Mine will be a kingdom of literacy.&rdquo; By the mid-1800s, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> had one of the highest literacy rates&#8212;more than 90&#37;&#8212;in the world.
