Proceeds will benefit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.hawaii.edu\/refugee-immigration-law-clinic\">Refugee and Immigration Law Clinic<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.hawaii.edu\/\">William <abbr title=\"Shaw\">S<\/abbr>. Richardson School of Law<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/ilokano\/\">Ilokano Language and Literature Program<\/a> in the College of Arts, Languages and Letters.<\/p>\n<p>Collins, an attorney on Maui, earned five degrees from <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr>&#8212;his last was a <abbr title=\"Doctor of Philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr> in <a href=\"https:\/\/politicalscience.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">political science<\/a> in 2010. Lum, a founding member of the N\u0101 H\u014dk\u016b Hanohano Award-winning group Keauhou, earned his bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degrees from <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, and is currently pursuing his <abbr>PhD<\/abbr> in political science.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The goal of the project is to think of the futures of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> that aren&#8217;t necessarily mediated by the American experience and aren\u2019t necessarily limited to plantation narratives, which is basically a derivative from the American story in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>,&rdquo; Collins said. &ldquo;The idea was to think of alternative futures where people who come to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> interact with the Hawaiian culture and language without the racial hierarchies or the mediating influence of Americanisms.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Supporting <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> programs<\/h2>\n<p>The <em>K\u0101wili<\/em> project was funded by the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Institute for Philippine Studies, a local non-profit. The group selected the Refugee and Immigration Law Clinic and Ilokano Language and Literature Program because of their purposes to help others and to &ldquo;take what people see as boundaries and use them as bridges.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The Refugee and Immigration Law Clinic provides law students with the opportunity to work on real cases on behalf of low-income immigrants in our <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> community,&rdquo; said <strong>John Egan<\/strong>, Refugee and Immigration Law Clinic\u2019s director. &ldquo;The funds will provide students with up-to-date research materials and texts needed to aid their clients in Immigration Court and in the green card process. This creative project will make listeners smile, and makes a real contribution to immigrant justice at the same time.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The concept of the album is brilliant! Hearing popular Filipino folks songs (in Ilokano, Tagalog and Visayan) sung in Hawaiian mele and two well-known Hawaiian mele sung in Ilokano literally gave me goosebumps,&rdquo; said <strong>Dean Domingo<\/strong>, Ilokano Language and Literature Program coordinator. &ldquo;The proceeds will benefit the Ilokano Language and Literature Program by helping the program on its mission and growth to preserve the Ilokano language, literature and culture; and providing scholarships to students in their pursuit of higher education.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>The project\u2019s beginning<\/h2>\n<p>The project started more than a decade ago when Collins and retired <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa professor <strong>Lilia Quindoza Santiago<\/strong> translated <em>Aloha <span aria-label=\"Oe\">&#699;Oe<\/span><\/em> into Ilokano, and the piece was performed by some members of the program. Collins also drew inspiration from Teresa Bright\u2019s <em>Hawaiinawa<\/em>, an album that features popular Okinawan songs translated into <span aria-label=\"\u014dlelo\">&#699;\u014dlelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>After a few unsuccessful attempts to see the <em>K\u0101wili<\/em> project through, Collins used his involvement in the <em>Lei <span aria-label=\"Nahonoapiilani\">Nahonoapi&#699;ilani<\/span>: Songs of West Maui<\/em> album with Lum and his brother, <strong>Nicholas Lum<\/strong>, a <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa graduate and current <abbr>PhD<\/abbr> student at <abbr>糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> Hilo\u2019s Ka Haka <span aria-label=\"Ula\">&#699;Ula<\/span> O <span aria-label=\"Keelik\u014dlani\">Ke&#699;elik\u014dlani<\/span> College of Hawaiian Language, to kickstart the project. The Lum brothers completed translating the Filipino folk songs into <span aria-label=\"\u014dlelo\">&#699;\u014dlelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> in 2019 and the <em>K\u0101wili<\/em> album was ready to be recorded.
