(Photo credit: Mark Sullivan\/<abbr>NOAA<\/abbr>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The first report on Papah&#257;naumoku&#257;kea Marine National Monument (<abbr>PMNM<\/abbr>) in more than 10 years provides an update of its resources and some surprising discoveries. <abbr>PMNM<\/abbr> is one of the largest fully protected marine conservation areas in the world, and it is a <abbr title=\"United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization\">UNESCO<\/abbr> World Heritage Site recognized for both it&#8217;s natural and cultural importance.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> M&#257;noa<\/a> is involved in <abbr>PMNM<\/abbr> research through various colleges and institutions such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.himb.hawaii.edu\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Institute of Marine Biology<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.botany.hawaii.edu\">Department of Botany<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/jimar\/\">Joint Institute of Marine and Atmospheric Research<\/a> (<abbr>JIMAR<\/abbr>). <strong>Brian Hauk<\/strong>, a resource protection manager at <abbr>JIMAR<\/abbr> for <abbr>PMNM<\/abbr>, which is under the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\u2019s National Ocean Service, was a part of the research team that conducted the <abbr>PMNM<\/abbr> 2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/sanctuaries.noaa.gov\/science\/condition\/pmnm\/\">report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"float:right;clear:right;margin:0 0 0 15px;\"><figure id=\"attachment_129835\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-129835\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/manoa-jimar-marine-sanctuary-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"fish swimming by coral reefs\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-129835\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/manoa-jimar-marine-sanctuary-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/manoa-jimar-marine-sanctuary-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/manoa-jimar-marine-sanctuary-2.jpg 677w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-129835\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rare fishes at Kure. (Photo credit: <span aria-label=\"Kaleomanuiwa\">Kaleomanu&#699;iwa<\/span> Wong)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n<p>The report includes a newly discovered mesophotic (a kind of coral ecosystem found in tropical and subtropical regions at depths ranging from almost 100 feet to over 490 feet below the ocean\u2019s surface) species, records of algae and fish found on deep dive surveys, non-indigenous marine species and an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/07\/07\/algae-species-discovered-infesting-nw-hawaiian-waters\/\">invasive species of cryptogenic algae, <em>Chondria tumulosa<\/em><\/a>, which is smothering Manawai reefs and everything in its path.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We found deep reefs at Kure atoll that had 100&#37; endemic fish populations on our surveys, and we have been working with our partners to describe several species that are new to science all together,&rdquo; said Hauk.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>PMNM<\/abbr>&#8216;s original management plan was released in 2008, and there has not been a substantial update, until now. This new report uses the most recent scientific research to assess <abbr>PMNM<\/abbr>&#8216;s resources and update their status and trends.
