However, replacing animal-derived surfactants with synthetic ones has proven difficult. This is in part because researchers have been unable to detect how the lung surfactant film reduces surface tension, which is key to creating new surfactants. Available methods have not allowed for the visualization of the surfactant films on the lungs, until now.<\/p>\n<h2>Groundbreaking method<\/h2>\n<p><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">糖心Vlog官方<\/abbr> M\u0101noa mechanical engineering and pediatrics Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.hawaii.edu\/~yzuo\/\"><strong>Yi Zuo<\/strong><\/a> has invented a groundbreaking method that allows direct visualization. Constrained Drop Surfactometry (<abbr title=\"Constrained Drop Surfactometry\">CDS<\/abbr>) uses the surface of a single droplet to simulate the fluid lining layer of the lung.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;In conjunction with imaging techniques such as atomic force microscopy, <abbr>CDS<\/abbr> allows researchers to see the three-dimensional structure of the adsorbed lung surfactant film at very low surface tensions occurring in the lung,&rdquo; Zuo said.<\/p>\n<p>Zuo\u2019s breakthrough research, &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.bpj.2020.06.033\">Atomic Force Microscopy Imaging of Adsorbed Pulmonary Surfactant Films<\/a>,&rdquo; was published in the August 18 issue of <em>Biophysical Journal<\/em> as a cover article.<\/p>\n<p>In the long run, Zuo hopes the biophysical mechanism by which lung surfactant reaches low surface tension can be translated to treat newborn and adult patients with respiratory complications. For example, in COVID-19-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome (<abbr title=\"COVID-19-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome\">C-ARDS<\/abbr>) cases, lung cells synthesizing the surfactant are attacked by the coronavirus and therefore the surfactant function likely becomes compromised.
