Asteroid 2020 <abbr>OO1<\/abbr> safely flew by Earth a week later. The discoveries from the Maui-based project are used by local high school students to direct follow-up observations with <abbr>LCO<\/abbr>. <abbr>HI STAR<\/abbr> students Esken Guarin and Jed Teagarden obtained data from the South Africa node of the <abbr>LCOGT<\/abbr> 1.0 meter network on the night 2020 <abbr>OO1<\/abbr> was discovered.<\/p>\n<p><strong>J.D. Armstrong<\/strong>, <abbr>HI STAR<\/abbr> director and <abbr>IfA<\/abbr> Maui outreach astronomer, also mentors Kihei Charter High School student David Florez who verified images with <abbr>LCO<\/abbr>\u2019s Faulkes Telescope North on Haleakal\u0101. Those observations were reported to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.minorplanetcenter.net\/iau\/mpc.html\">Minor Planet Center<\/a> (<abbr>MPC<\/abbr>), and the students received credit.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It\u2019s great to see our high school students being part of cutting edge science, using data from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s observatories and around the world. These are our future <abbr title=\"science, technology, engineering and mathematics\">STEM<\/abbr> superstars,&rdquo; said Armstrong.<\/p>\n<p>Guarin and Teagarden received high honors at the 2020 Maui County Science and Engineering Fair for their astronomy research. Guarin has observed exoplanets and authored several <abbr>MPC<\/abbr> circulars.
